Fontana del Porcellino – Florence, Italy

If you liked Florence and you want to make sure that you return to this beautiful city one day, then you should go to the Mercato Nuovo! It is a covered market in the historic center of Florence, near the Palazzo Vecchio. The biggest attraction of this market are not the stalls of the textile and leather goods retailers, but the “Fontana del Porcellino” (Piglet Fountain). It is a small fountain with a bronze statue, not of a piglet, but of a full-grown boar from the 17th century. The legend says, that the one who rubs the shining snout of the boar and puts a coin in his mouth at the same time will have luck and return to Florence. But beware, the process is only successful if the coin falls into the well water which is protected with a small gatter! To make sure you have luck and return to Florence one day, you should rub his muzzle once again, and only after the coin has fallen into the water 🙂 … it’s a precautionary measure … 🙂 I wish you good luck and a nice stay in Florence!

Wenn Dir Florenz gefiel und Du sicher gehen möchtest, dass Du eines Tages in diese wunderschöne Stadt zurückkehrst, dann solltest Du zum Mercato Nuovo gehen! Es ist eine überdeckte Markthalle im historischen Zentrum von Florenz, in der Nähe des Palazzo Vecchio. Die größte Attraktion dieses Marktes sind nicht die Stände der Textil und Lederwarenhändler, sondern die “Fontana del Porcellino” (Ferkelbrunnen). Es ist ein kleiner Brunnen mit einer Bronzestatue, nicht eines Ferkels, sondern eines ausgewachsenen Wildschweins aus dem 17. Jahrhundert. Die Legende besagt, dass derjenige, der die glänzende Schnauze des Wildschweins reibt und gleichzeitig eine Münze in den Mund steckt, Glück haben wird und nach Florenz zurückkehrt. Aber Vorsicht, der Vorgang ist nur erfolgreich, wenn die Münze in das mit einem kleinen Gitter geschützte Brunnenwasser fällt! Um sicher zu gehen, dass Du auch Glück hast und eines Tages nach Florenz zurückkehrst, solltest du seine Schnauze noch einmal reiben, und zwar nachdem die Münze ins Wasser gefallen ist 🙂 … es ist nur eine Vorsichtsmaßnahme … 🙂 Ich wünsche Dir viel Glück und einen schönen Aufenthalt in Florenz!

Flight connections to Gibraltar International Airport

The Gibraltar International Airport is unique in the World. The runway crosses Winston Churchill Avenue, the only road link with Spain. For pedestrians and cars there are neither over nor underpasses to cross the airfield. Actually, the road over the runway is closed, similarly to train crossings, at every take-off and landing. 

The Airport’s terminal building is adjacent to Gibraltar’s land border with Spain and only a few hundred meters from Gibraltar‘s city center away with its busy shopping mile the „Main Street“. 

There are weekly flights by British Airways and Easyjet to Gibraltar from London, Bristol and Manchester in the United Kingdom and one weekly flight from Tangier and Casablanca by Royal Air Maroc. Spanish airlines are not flying to Gibraltar. Malaga is the nearest international airport in Spain. From there you can take a taxi to the border crossing of Gibraltar. A cheaper option is offered by a travel company from Gibraltar which runs a shuttle bus service to and from Malaga airport twice a day.

Der Internationale Flughafen von Gibraltar ist einzigartig in der Welt. Die Landebahn kreuzt die Winston Churchill Avenue, die einzige Strassenverbindung mit Spanien. Um den Flugplatz zu überqueren gibt es weder für Fussgänger noch für Autos Über- oder Unterführungen. Die Strasse über die Landebahn wird ähnlich wie bei Bahnübergängen bei jedem Start und jeder Landung gesperrt. 

Das Terminalgebäude des Flughafens grenzt an die Landesgrenze mit Spanien und ist nur wenige hundert Meter von der Innenstadt von Gibraltar mit seiner belebten Hauptstrasse der „Main Street“ entfernt. 

Es bestehen wöchentliche Flugverbindungen nach Gibraltar von London, Bristol und Manchester imVereinigten Königreich mit der British Airways und mit Easyjet sowie ein wöchentlicher Flug von Tangier und Casablanca mit der Royal Air Maroc. Spanische Fluggesellschaften fliegen nicht nach Gibraltar. Malaga ist der nächst gelegene internationale Flughafen in Spanien. Von dort gelangt man über den Landweg mit einem Taxi bis zum Grenzübergang von Gibraltar. Eine günstigere Variante offeriert seit kurzem ein Reiseunternehmen aus Gibraltar welche den Flughafen in Malaga und Gibraltar mit einem Shuttle-Bus einmal morgens und abends bedient.

Discover the Via Postumia in Northern Italy

The Via Postumia was a road in Northern Italy that was built by the Romans around 150 BC; it led from Aquileia, through the Po valley over the Apennines to the city of Genoa. Today, this historic route largely forms the centerpiece of the new Italian pilgrimage route, the Via Postumia, to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.

The Via Postumia is 930 km long and leads from Aquileia to Genoa and crosses the entire north of Italy from east to west, i.e. through the Regions Friuli-Giulia Venezia, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, Piedmont and Liguria.

What didn’t exist until now, was an arrow-marked pilgrim route that crosses Italy from east to west and continues from Genoa to Menton in France along the Ligurian coast. The idea to develop such a route emerged at the World Meeting of the Associations of Friends of the St. James Way in Krakow in September 2013, on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of the rediscovery of the body of St. James. Shortly after his return from this World Meeting in Poland, Andrea Vitiello began this task and decided to trace and re-enact the paths of medieval pilgrims from the East through Italy using advice and opinions from historians, other experts and friends.

The gigantic task of Andrea was to create a route that fit into the map and the network of all the St. James Ways in Europe. Another objective of his project is to promote and support the local businesses along the newly created Via Postumia pilgrimage route.

The result of this great initiative is commendable. The Way of St. James through Italy was formally restored. I am convinced that pilgrims who choose this route through Italy on their way to Santiago de Compostela will be delighted in every way! The Via Postumia crosses the wonderful landscapes of northern Italy on quiet and signposted paths, past nine UNESCO heritage sites and through some of the most beautiful cities in Italy. I am already looking forward to this historic, culinary and spiritual pilgrimage through Italy.

Die Via Postumia war eine um das Jahr 150 v. Chr. gebaute Römerstrasse in Italien, die von Aquileia, durch die Poebene über die Apenninen bis nach Genua führte. Dieser historische Weg bildet heute weitestgehend das Kernstück des Italienischen Pilgerwegs, die Via Postumia, nach Santiago de Compostela in Galizien, Spanien.

Dieser Weg, die Via Postumia, ist eine etwa 930 km lange Route die von Aquileia nach Genua führt und den gesamten Norden Italiens von Osten nach Westen durchquert, also Friaul-Julisch Venetien, Lombardei, Emilia Romagna, Piemont und Ligurien.

Was es bis jetzt nicht gab, war eine mit Pfeilen markierte Pilger Route die Italien von Osten nach Westen durchquert und von Genua weiter nach Menton in Frankreich entlang der ligurischen Küste führt. Die Idee einen solchen Weg zu entwickeln entstand am Welttreffen der Jakobsvereine im September 2013 in Krakau, anlässlich des 1200-jährigen Jubiläums der Wiederentdeckung des Leichnams des Heiligen Jacobus. Kurz nach seiner Rückkehr von diesem Weltmeeting in Polen begann Andrea Vitiello mit dieser Aufgabe und beschloss anhand von Ratschlägen und Meinungen von Historikern, anderen Experten und Freunden die Wege mittelalterlicher Pilger aus dem Osten durch Italien zurückzuverfolgen und nachzubilden.

Die gigantische Aufgabe von Andrea bestand darin, eine Route zu erstellen, die in die Karte und das Netzwerk aller Jakobswege von Europa passte. Ein weiteres Ziel seines Projekts ist die Förderung und Unterstützung der lokalen Unternehmen entlang der neu geschaffenen Pilgerroute Via Postumia.

Das Ergebnis dieser großartigen Initiative ist lobenswert. Der Jakobsweg durch Italien wurde formal wieder hergestellt. Ich bin überzeugt, dass Pilger, die diese Route durch Italien auf ihrem Weg nach Santiago de Compostela wählen, in jeder Hinsicht begeistert sein werden! Die Via Postumia durchquert die wundervollen Landschaften Norditaliens auf ruhigen und beschilderten Wegen, vorbei an neun UNESCO-Kulturstätten und durch einige der schönsten Städte Italiens. Ich freue mich schon jetzt auf diesen historischen, kulinarischen und spirituellen Pilgerweg durch Italien.

Defibrillator on the Beach in Paradise, St. Barth, French West Indies

Saint Barthélemy (or St. Barth, St. Barths, St-Barts) is a small Caribbean island in the French West Indies (FWI) with an area of approximately 25 square kilometers and about 9000 inhabitants. The capital, with its beautiful natural harbor, is Gustavia. Before the end of the Napoleonic wars, St. Barth was for a short time a Swedish colony, but later fell back to France. The language, cuisine and culture are clearly French, i.e. you will not miss the typical French croissant in St. Barth. The island is a very popular tourist destination; and especially in the wintertime the beautiful and the rich are bustling there.

The Saline – Before the time of tourism, the few islanders lived on fishing, breeding livestock, growing cotton and extracting salt. On the road to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island (saline) is an old salt marsh that was exploited until the 1970s. Today, this saline is a unique ecosystem and considered a sanctuary and breeding ground for rare freshwater and seawater birds. But in the salt marsh are still quite different beauties, there are from the salt over the decades gnawed and preserved tree trunks, trees that once here, in this place, the tired and thirsty salt pickers their shadow ghost donated.

Defibrillator in Paradise – A defibrillator or Defi is a medical device for defibrillation and possibly for cardioversion. It is a lifesaver. The Defi can end, with targeted power surges, especially cardiac arrhythmia. Defibrillators are found in intensive care units, operating rooms or emergency stations and ambulances. For a few years, these devices have also been available in public places such as airports and train stations. In emergencies, these can also be operated by laymen, which was probably also a reason, amongst other considerations, to install a Defibrillator in the Saline, one of the most beautiful beaches of St. Barth!

Die Hauptstadt, mit ihrem wunderschönen natürlichen Hafen, ist Gustavia. Die Sprache, Küche und Kultur sind eindeutig Französisch, d.h. Du wirst in St. Barth den typischen französischen Croissant nicht vermissen. Die Insel ist ein sehr beliebtes Touristenziel; und vor allem in der Winterzeit tummeln sich dort die Schönen und Reichen.

Die Saline – Vor der Zeit des Tourismus lebten die wenigen Insel-Bewohner vom Fischfang, der Aufzucht von Nutztieren, dem Anbau von Baumwolle und der Gewinnung von Salz. Auf der Strasse zu einem der schönsten Strände der Insel (Saline) liegt eine alte Salzmarsch die bis in 1970er Jahre ausgebeutet wurde. Heute ist diese Saline ein einzigartiges Ökosystem und gilt als Zufluchtsort und Brutstätte für seltene Süsswasser und Seewasservögel. Aber in der Salzmarsch befinden sich noch ganz andere Schönheiten, es sind vom Salz über die Jahrzehnte zermürbten und konservierten Baumstämme, Bäume die einst hier, an diesem Ort, den müden und durstigen Salzpflückern ihren Schatten Gespenst gespendet haben.

Defibrillator im Paradies – Ein Defibrillator oder Defi ist ein medizinisches Gerät zur Defibrillation und möglicherweise zur Kardioversion. Es ist ein Lebensretter. Das Defi kann mit gezielten Stromstößen, insbesondere Herzrhythmusstörungen, beenden. Defibrillatoren findet man auf Intensivstationen, Operationssälen oder Notfallstationen und Krankenwagen. Seit einigen Jahren sind diese Geräte auch an öffentlichen Orten wie Flughäfen und Bahnhöfen verfügbar. In Notfällen können diese auch Laien bedienen, was unter anderem auch ein Grund war, einen Defibrillator in der Saline, einem der schönsten Strände von St. Barth, zu Installieren!

A bicycle stand in Berlin

I shot this picture of a bicycle stand in Berlin. The example on the picture „Klimaschutzumsetzungsgerätfestmachstelle“ has “only” 40 letters, but the length of the word still impressed me. I believe, that the German language has the most letters-rich words of all languages. The longest words, which are also in the dictionary and which are not a mere string of indiscriminate nouns, are mainly found in laws and regulations.

Two examples:

„Rindfleisch­etikettierungs­überwachungs­aufgaben­übertragungs­gesetz“ (62 letters)

Translation: Beef labeling surveillance task transfer law 

„Personenkraftwagenenergieverbrauchskennzeichnungsverordnung“ (59 letters)

Dieses Bild eines Fahrradständers habe ich in Berlin aufgenommen. Das abgebildete Beispiel „Klimaschutzumsetzungsgerätfestmachstelle“ hat zwar „nur „48 Buchstaben, aber die Länge des Wortes hat mich trotzdem beeindruckt. Die deutsche Sprache hat die buchstabenreichsten Wörter aller Sprachen, oder kennt ihr eine andere Sprache mit so langen Wörtern? Die längsten Wörter, welche auch im Duden stehen und keine reine Aneinanderreihung von wahllosen Nomen sind, finden sich vor allem in Gesetzen und Reglementen.

Pacific Northwest, United States of America

This is a great summertime trip for retirees. While it is a common perception that this area has perpetual rain, there are great areas here to visit that buck that understanding. Located on the northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula, towns like Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend are located in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. Sequim, which is located in the center of that rain shadow, receives only 14 inches of rain per year. The vast majority of that rain falls between October and April. The weather in peak season between June and September is absolutely delightful. It is sunny with low humidity and temps in the 70’s to low 80’s (21 – 26 centigrade). This is one reason Sequim has been ranked as one of the best small towns in the pacific northwest to live. It is also a very popular destination for west coast residents to move to for retirement.

The towns here are quaint seaside towns, particularly Sequim and Port Townsend. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful, with the Olympic National Park just to the southwest. Port Townsend has a great walkable downtown area with nice restaurants and a first-rate farmer market every weekend. The nearby Fort Worden State Park is a former military installation where many of the buildings have been converted to art facilities. This is a great place to learn art from traditional painting to advanced woodworking.

The area is also a gateway to Seattle, the San Juan Islands and Victoria, BC, which is a short ferry ride from Port Angeles. This area makes a great standalone trip. A visit here can be months long without running out of things to do.

Mediterranen Coast, Spain and other European Countries

The Mediterranean Coast if Spain is a great location for an overseas retiree RV trip. Spain is often listed as one of the best places for US residents to retire on a budget. It has excellent culture, is generally friendly to foreigners, and sports a relatively low cost of living. The EU also has very streamlined travel regulations between nations, so it makes a great base camp to venture out and explore other EU member states and Switzerland.

RVing in Europe is typically done in smaller campervans than those you may be used to in the US. These RVs are designed to navigate the smaller roads in Europe and provide only the basic services you really need to live. A place to cook, a place to sleep and maybe a bathroom, although those are less common. The lack of RV amenities are made up for by the lifestyle in the area. The southern US is a great retirement RV destination. The weather is fantastic year-round so you can plan your trip at any time. While the southern US as a whole is a great retirement RV destination, the desert southwest stands out for a number of reasons. First, it has great weather. Not only is it generally warm, but also generally very dry. The lack of humidity does three things. First, it makes the warmer temps feel more pleasant. Second, when the sun goes down the temps tend to cool faster, making sleeping more pleasant. Finally, drier air is easier to breath and can be beneficial for a number of health conditions common in the retired community.

The desert southwest is also less crowded then places like Florida during the snowbird season and the cost of living is generally lower. There are other places in the south that are also less crowded then Florida, like Alabama, Louisiana and Texas. These are all great areas in their own right, but the desert southwest gets the edge for its better weather and greater prevalence of free or cheap camping opportunities.

From Palm Springs, CA east to New Mexico there is a great mix of cities and towns with a broad range of cultural and entertainment facilities. These areas are surrounded by camping facilities ranging from vast free boondocking areas to massive high-end resorts. The diversity here will allow any retiree to live exactly as they desire.

Koi or Nishikigoi

The Koi or Goi, in Japanese the Nishikigoi is a breeding form of carp (Cyprinus). The home of this carp is not Japan but the „Koi Bar“ in Protaras in Cyprus. Without deepening myself in etymological research, I find the name of this bar well chosen, Japanese Koi or Cyprinus (carp) live in Cypress, Cupressus or Cyprus 🙂 By the way, the Koi Bar is located in the Hotel Capo Bay on the Fig Tree Bay, perhaps the most famous beach in Cyprus.

Most likely, the monochrome Koi came from Iran and were bred by the nobility in Japan since the 19th century to the multicolored Koi that we know today. They were for the owners of these fish a status symbol of wealth and upscale social status in society. The Koi are ornamental fish and live at least between 40 to 70 years. During my stay in Tokyo I was repeatedly advised not to fish and eat them whilst strolling through the Imperial Palace East Gardens 🙂 The penalties are severe and the Koi would not be very tasty anyway 🙂

Der Koi oder Goi, auf japanisch der Nishikigoi ist eine Zuchtform des Karpfens (Cyprinus). Die Heimat dieser hier abgebildeten Karpfen ist nicht Japan sondern die „Koi Bar“ in Protaras, Zypern. Ohne mich jetzt in etymologische Recherchen zu vertiefen, finde ich den Namen dieser Bar gelungen. Japanische Kois oder Cyprinus (Karpfen) tummeln sich in Cypress, Cupressus oder Zypern 🙂 Uebrigens die Koi Bar befindet sich im Hotel Capo Bay an der Feigenbaumbucht, dem vielleicht berühmtesten Strand Zyperns.

Ursprünglich stammen die einfarbigen Koi wahrscheinlich aus dem Iran und wurden von den Adeligen in Japan im 19. Jahrhundert zu den uns heute bekannten mehrfarbigen Koi gezüchtet. Für die Besitzer dieser Fische waren sie ein Statussymbol für Reichtum und gehobener sozialer Stellung in der Gesellschaft. Das Alter der Koi liegt zwischen 40 und 70 Jahren und sie werden ausschliesslich als Zierfische gehalten. Während meinem Aufenthalt in Tokyo wurde mir wiederholt geraten keine dieser Karpfen im kaiserlichen Park (Imperial Palace East Gardens) zu fischen und zu verspeisen 🙂 Es würden empfindliche Strafen drohen und der Koi wäre sowieso nicht besonders schmackhaft 🙂

Le Mont Saint Michel

I have always had the desire to visit Mont Saint Michel in the Normandy. Finally, on my way back from Guernsey, I decided to book a day trip in St. Malo to Le Mont Saint Michel; and I was happily looking forward to discover this UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the World Heritage of the Way of Saint James in France.

The 90 meter high Island, which covers an area of only 55,000 square meters, is world famous for its 11th-century Abbey Mont Saint Michel. The place has become a major tourist attraction and is visited annually by well over 2 million tourists; I was told that the Eiffel Tower in Paris would be visited by less people! As already mentioned, I had begun the one hour bus trip with great anticipation hoping to discover a new and interesting site which I had never visited before.

Arriving at Le Mont Saint Michel, you can hop on one of the free shuttle buses that take tourists along the causeway to what one could call, with a circumference of about 800 meters, the Island. Alternatively, you could also walk there. Viewed from afar, the Mont Saint Michel rises sublime from the Wadden Sea and promises an exciting journey back in time to the Middle Ages, a time when pilgrims begged the Abbey for admission to rest and recover from a long and tiring journey on their way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

However, I am sorry to say, the romance of the past has gone!Thousands of tourists and school groups (it was a French holiday) crowded the entrance to Mont Saint Michel. On the way up to the abbey, the masses squeezed into the narrow and steep footpath which is lined with „hundreds“ of restaurants and souvenir shops. People literally stepped on each other’s feet, and I had no other choice but to flee into one of the many overcrowded tourist Restaurants! I finally managed to “fight” my way up to the entrance door of the abbey, but the waiting time for the admission to visit this historic monument took too long and I risked missing my bus back to Saint Malo. Therefore, I decided to break off and end my visit! 

In summary, this by greed and mass tourism destroyed world heritage has been a great disappointment to me! Should you ever decide to visit the Mont Saint Michel, I recommend to plan this trip outside the holiday season and not during a national holiday in France!

Ich hatte schon immer den Wunsch den Mont Saint Michel in der Normandie zu besuchen. Auf dem Rückweg von Guernsey nach St. Malo hatte ich mich dann kurzerhand entschieden eine Tagestour nach Le Mont Saint Michel zu buchen um dieses Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO und Teil des Welterbes des Jakobsweges in Frankreich zu entdecken. 

Die ohne Bauten etwa 90 Meter hohe Insel, mit einer Fläche von nur 55‘000 Quadratmetern, ist weltbekannt für die im 11. Jahrhundert erbaute Abtei Mont Saint Michel. Der Ort hat sich zu einer grossen Touristenattraktion entwickelt und wird jährlich von weit über 2 Millionen Menschen besucht; mir wurde gesagt, dass der Eifelturm in Paris von weniger Menschen besichtigt würde! Mit grosser Vorfreude Neues zu entdecken hatte ich die einstündige Busreise nach Le Mont Saint Michel angetreten. Angekommen in Le Mont Saint Michel steigt man in einen der kostenlosen Shuttle Busse, der die Touristen entlang des Dammes zu dem fahren, was man mit einem Umfang von ca. 800 Meter die Insel nennen könnte. Alternativ könnte man auch gehen. Aus der Ferne betrachtet ragt der Mont Saint Michel erhaben aus dem Wattenmeer und verspricht eine spannende Zeitreise zurück ins Mittelalter, in eine Zeit wo sich die Pilger auf ihrem Weg nach Santiago de Compostela in Spanien von ihren Strapazen der langen und anstrengenden Reise in der Abtei oben auf der Insel ausruhten um neue Kräfte zu sammeln.

Aber von Romantik der Vergangenheit war hier keine Spur! Tausende von Touristen und Schulklassen (es war ein französischer Feiertag) drängten zum Eingang und zwängten sich den schmalen und von Restaurants und Souvenirläden gesäumten, steilen und engen Fussweg hinauf zur Abtei Mont Saint Michel. Man ist sich beim Aufstieg  buchstäblich auf die Füsse getreten und mir blieb nichts anderes übrig als mich in eines der vielen überfüllten Restaurants zu flüchten! Es ist mir schlussendlich gelungen, bis zur Pforte der Abtei „vorzudringen“, aber die Wartezeit für die Besichtigung dauerte zu lange und ich riskierte meinen Bus zurück nach Saint Malo zu verpassen. 

Deshalb habe ich beschlossen meinen Besuch abzubrechen und zu beenden! Zusammenfassend ist dieses von Gier und Massentourismus „zerstörte“ Welterbe eine große Enttäuschung für mich! Sollten Sie sich jemals dazu entschliessen, den Mont Saint Michel zu besuchen, empfehle ich, diese Reise ausserhalb der Ferienzeit und nicht während eines Nationalfeiertags in Frankreich zu planen!

Verkehrshaus Lucerne (Swiss Museum of Transport)

The Swiss Museum of Transport („Verkehrshaus“) in Lucerne is the most visited museum in the country. No matter if tall, small, young or old, the „Verkehrshaus“ offers something interesting for everyone. In my view, it is one of the most beautiful and impressive museums in Switzerland. Also to mention is of course the beautiful location on the lake! The entire „Verkehrshaus“ Complex (20’000 m2) shows in an exciting way the development of transport and mobility by rail, on the road and on water, but also in the air and in space. Worth mentioning are the very nice collections of old locomotives and railway wagons, the historic aircrafts, satellites and space capsules, but also the submarine „Auguste Piccard“ and the balloons of the Piccard family! As a lover of old cars, I was particularly impressed by the classic car collection, where at the push of a button the desired model is presented to the visitors on a purpose-built stage! The Planetarium or the IMAX movie theater are other ways to enjoy the day in the „Verkehrshaus“ complex; and last but not least, for the tireless museum visitors, I recommend a side-step to the “Lindt Chocolate Adventure” and the Hans Erni Art Museum.

To get to the „Verkehrshaus“, it is best to take the trolleybus from Lucerne main station. However, a short boat ride on the paddle steamer from the main station harbor across Lake Lucerne to the „Verkehrshaus“ would be an unforgettable alternative to bus or car. In fact, the boat ride across the lake to the Swiss Museum of Transport is my preferred option!

Das Verkehrshaus der Schweiz in Luzern ist das meistbesuchte Museum des Landes. Egal ob groß, klein, jung oder alt, das Verkehrshaus bietet für jeden etwas Interessantes. Meiner Meinung nach ist es eines der schönsten und beeindruckendsten Museen der Schweiz. Erwähnenswert ist natürlich auch die wunderschöne Lage am See! Das gesamte Verkehrshaus (20’000 m2) zeigt auf spannende Weise die Entwicklung von Verkehr und Mobilität auf der Schiene, auf der Straße und auf dem Wasser, aber auch in der Luft und im Weltraum.

Erwähnenswert sind die sehr schönen Sammlungen alter Lokomotiven und Eisenbahnwaggons, die historischen Flugzeuge, Satelliten und Raumkapseln, aber auch das U-Boot “Auguste Piccard” und die Ballons der Familie Piccard! Als Liebhaber alter Autos war ich besonders beeindruckt von der Oldtimer-Kollektion, bei der auf Knopfdruck das gewünschte Modell den Besuchern auf einer eigens dafür gebauten Bühne präsentiert wird! Das Planetarium oder das IMAX-Kino sind weitere Möglichkeiten, den Tag im Verkehrshaus zu genießen; Und zu guter Letzt empfehle ich den unermüdlichen Museumsbesuchern einen Abstecher in das „Lindt Chocolate Adventure” und zum Hans Erni Art Museum.

Um zum Verkehrshaus zu gelangen, nehmen Sie am besten den Trolleybus vom Hauptbahnhof Luzern. Eine kurze Bootsfahrt mit dem Raddampfer vom Hauptbahnhof über den Vierwaldstättersee zum Museum wäre jedoch eine unvergessliche Alternative zum Bus oder Auto. In der Tat ist die Bootsfahrt über den See zum Verkehrshaus der Schweiz meine bevorzugte Variante!

Château-d’Œx in the Swiss Alps

The village of Château-d’Œx (950 m) is situated above the valley of the Saane in the Vaud Alps, east of the town of Vevey in Switzerland. In summer as well as in winter, this community in the Pays-d’Enhaut has a lot to offer to its visitors and tourists. The beautiful Alpine landscape around Château-d’Œx invites them to go on extended hikes between the spring and autumn seasons. But also the winter tourists get what they need; a cabin cable car from Château-d’Œx and various ski lifts are in operation on the northern slopes of the Rocher du Midi and the Monts Chevreuils, as well as La Lécherette.

Since 1979, the venue has hosted the International Balloon Festival and Château-d’Œx has become a world-famous Mecca for balloonists. In the center of the village, not far from the starry spot of Bertrand Piccard for his adventurous non-stop balloon ride around the world, is the Balloon Museum (Espace Balloon) in the former town hall, a renovated historic building of the municipality. Speaking of traveling around the world, do you remember the adventure movie (Around the World in 80 days) with the British actor and Oscar price winner David Niven? He lived and died in 1983 in Château-d’Œx where he also found his final resting place in the cemetery of the village church, a quiet place, just a few steps above the balloon museum.

In der Dorfmitte, unweit des Starplatzes von Bertrand Piccard zu seiner abenteuerlichen Nonstop-Ballonfahrt rund um die Erde befindet sich das Ballonmuseum (Espace Ballon) im ehemaligen Rathaus, einem renovierten historischem Gebäude der Gemeinde. Apropos Reisen rund um die Welt, erinnern Sie sich an den Abenteuerfilm (In 80 Tagen um die Welt) mit dem britischen Schauspieler und Oscar-Preisträger David Niven? Er lebte und verstarb 1983 in Château-d’Œx wo er auch seine letzte Ruhestätte auf dem Friedhof der Dorfkirche fand, ein stiller Ort, nur ein paar wenige Schritte oberhalb des Ballonmuseums.

The Saatchi Gallery in London

What I did not know before my visit to the Saatchi Gallery in London was that the advertising magnate Charles Saatchi, who opened it in 1985, is in the background of this art gallery. The passionate art lover thus made his extensive collection accessible to a wide audience. Admission to all exhibitions is free for visitors and the gallery was pretty empty on Saturday when I was there. The gallery, or rather the museum, has an exhibition space of approximately 50,000 square meters and is located in the former headquarters of the Duke of York on King’s Road in the Chelsea district, near Sloane Square underground station. Impressive are not only the exhibited works but also the gallery itself. Someone took a historic building and turned it into one of the best museums in the world. The gallery has just the right size, the lighting is superb, the navigation inside is child’s play, the elevators are fast and comfortable. In short, the architecture is invisible, it serves the main purpose of exhibiting art and is not a self-staging of an architect.

Was ich vor meinem Besuch der Saatchi Galerie in London nicht wusste war, dass im Hintergrund dieser Kunststätte der Werbemagnat Charles Saatchi steht welcher sie 1985 eröffnete. Der passionierte Kunstliebhaber machte damit seine umfangreiche Sammlung einem breiten Publikum zugänglich. Der Eintritt zu allen Ausstellungen ist für die Besucher kostenlos und die Galerie war ziemlich leer am Samstag als ich dort war. Die Galerie oder besser gesagt das Museum hat eine Ausstellungsfläche von ungefähr 50.000 m² und befindet sich im ehemaligen Hauptquartier des Duke of York an der King’s Road im Stadtteil Chelsea in der Nähe der U-Bahn-Station Sloane Square. Beeindruckend sind nicht nur die ausgestellten Werke sondern auch die Galerie selbst. Jemand nahm ein historisches Gebäude und verwandelte es in eines der besten Museen der Welt. Die Galerie hat genau die richtige Grösse, die Beleuchtung ist hervorragend, die Navigation im Inneren ist ein Kinderspiel, die Aufzüge sind schnell und bequem. Kurz gesagt, die Architektur ist unsichtbar, sie dient dem Hauptzweck, Kunst auszustellen und ist keine Selbstinszenierung eines Architekten.

The Bibendum in Chelsea, London

In the early 1980s, today’s Bibendum Oyster Bar was a “One Stop Michelin Shop” and certainly the nicest car garage in London’s Chelsea. At the corner to the bar, where the gasoline dispensers used to be, is now a flower stall and the former garage entrance is home to one of the best oyster bars in London. In this historic Art Deco building, with its large windows and vintage tiles, one feels back in time to a French bistro of the 1930s. The ambience is elegant but casual. The crustacean-laden menu is a culinary delight for every gourmet. From the bar, a staircase leads up to the Bibendum, the second Restaurant in this magnificent building. I was last here in the late eighties and it is better today than I remembered! If you’re in the area, try the Bibendum, either downstairs at the Bar or upstairs in the Restaurant :), I can highly recommend it.

In den frühen 1980er Jahren war die heutige Bibendum Austernbar ein „One Stop Michelin Shop“ und sicher die schönste Autogarage im Londoner Stadtteil Chelsea. An der Ecke zur Bar, wo einst die Tankstelle  stand, befindet sich heute ein Blumenstand und in der ehemaligen Garageneinfahrt befindet sich eine der besten Austernbars Londons. In diesem historischen Art Deco Gebäude, mit seinen grossen Fenstern und Fliesen-Gemälden fühlt man sich versetzt in ein französisches Bistro der 1930er Jahre. Das Ambiente ist elegant aber locker. Die krustentierlastige Speisekarte ist für jeden Gourmet ein kulinarischer Hochgenuss. Von der Bar führt eine Treppe hinauf zum Bibendum dem zweiten Restaurant in diesem prachtvollen Gebäude. Ich war das letzte Mal in den späten Achtziger Jahren im Bibendum und es ist heute besser als ich es in Erinnerung hatte! Wenn man in der Gegend ist, sollte man das Bibendum ausprobieren, entweder unten in der Bar oder oben im Restaurant 🙂 ich kann diesen Ort wärmstens empfehlen.

Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris

The Musée de l’Orangerie is located in the Jardin des Tuileries. It’s on the river Seine facing side, at the lower end of the park. In fact, this small but fine Museum is adjacent to the Place de la Concorde. Art lovers of Impressionism get their money’s worth here in the Orangerie. 

The heart of the permanent exhibition is located on the ground floor. Eight water lily paintings by Claude Monet await their viewers in two large oval rooms. At the initiative of former minister president Georges Clémenceau, these panoramic paintings of Monet were shown first to the public in the 1920s. For this project, the Orangerie was considered an ideal place to celebrate Monet’s impressionism. Looking at his works, you somehow find yourself back in Monet’s beloved garden in Giverny.

The lower level of the museum focuses on the works of other artists such as Gauguin, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Modigliani, etc. A visit to the Orangerie is recommended and the ticket can be purchased in combination with an entry to the Musée d’Orsay at a reduced price. Das Musée de l’Orangerie befindet sich im Jardin des Tuileries. Es liegt an der Seine-Seite, am unteren Ende des Parks. Genau genommen, grenzt dieses kleine, aber feine Museum an den Place de la Concorde. Kunstliebhaber des Impressionismus kommen hier in der Orangerie auf ihre Kosten.

Das Herzstück der Dauerausstellung befindet sich im Erdgeschoss. Acht Seerosengemälde von Claude Monet erwarten ihre Zuschauer in zwei grossen ovalen Räumen. Auf Initiative des ehemaligen Ministerpräsidenten Georges Clémenceau wurden diese Panoramabilder von Monet in den 1920er Jahren erstmals der Öffentlichkeit gezeigt. Für dieses Projekt galt die Orangerie als ein idealer Ort, um Monets Impressionismus zu zelebrieren. Der Betrachter dieser Seerosengemälde findet sich irgendwie wieder in Monets geliebten Garten in Giverny.

Die untere Ebene des Museums konzentriert sich auf die Werke anderer Künstler wie Gauguin, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Modigliani usw. Ein Besuch der Orangerie ist empfehlenswert und das Ticket kann in Kombination mit einem Eintritt in das Musée d’Orsay zu einem reduzierten Preis gekauft werden. Viel Spass beim Besuch dieser beiden herausragenden Museen in Paris!

The Queen Astrid Chapel at the Lake Lucerne

Yesterday, on my way to Lucerne, I drove past the place where a tragic accident happened 83 years ago. On August 29, 1935, Astrid of Sweden and Queen of Belgium lost her still young life in a tragic car accident. The disaster happened near Lake Lucerne on the Luzernerstrasse, a few hundred meters before the village of Küssnacht am Rigi. On that day in August 1935, the Royal Sedan, a Packard 120 Convertible Coupe, came off the road and crashed into a pear tree. Queen Astrid died at the accident site, the driver King Leopold and a second passenger survived the accident with heavy injuries.

The fate of Queen Astrid shook the world at that time, similar to the accidental death of Princess Diana 21 years ago. Shortly after the accident, work began on building a memorial site at the scene of the accident and the site was inaugurated a year later. The Astrid Chapel and a memorial cross, on a sloping meadow overlooking the lake, are reminiscent of this tragic event in 1935.

Gestern auf meinem nach Luzern bin ich an der Stelle vorbeigefahren, wo sich vor 83 Jahren ein tragischer Unfall ereignete. Am 29. August 1935 verlor Astrid von Schweden und Königin von Belgien in einem tragischen Autounfall ihr noch junges Leben. Das Unglück geschah unweit des Vierwaldstättersees auf der Luzernerstrasse, vor der Ortschaft Küssnacht am Rigi. An diesem Tag im August 1935 geriet die königliche Limousine, ein Packard-120 Convertible Coupé, von der Strasse ab und prallte in einen Birnbaum. Königin Astrid starb an der Unfallstelle, der Fahrer König Leopold und ein zweiter Passagier überlebten den Unfall mit schweren Verletzungen.

Das Schicksal der Königin Astrid erschütterte damals die Welt, ähnlich wie vor 21 Jahre der Unfalltod von Prinzessin Diana. Bereits kurz nach dem Unglück wurde am Unfallort mit dem Bau einer Gedenkstätte begonnen und ein Jahr später eingeweiht. Die Astrid Kapelle und ein Gedenkkreuz, auf einer abfallenden Wiese zum Seeufer, erinnern an dieses tragische Ereignis im Jahre 1935.

Way of Saint James crossing lake of Zurich

On the south side of Rapperswil train station, a wooden pilgrimage bridge takes you across the lake of Zurich. The Goal of the Pilgrims is the monestary Einsiedeln. Sixteen years ago, this bridge which was originally built in 1358, had been restored. The footbridge is about 850 meters long and reaveals the pilgrims a wonderful far-sighted view over the lake of Zurich. An unforgettable section on the Way of St. James through Switzerland.

Auf der Südseite vom Bahnhof Rapperswil führt ein hölzerner Pilgersteg über den Zürichsee. Das Ziel der Jakobspilger ist das Kloster Einsiedeln. Vor 16 Jahren wurde dieser ursprünglich im Jahr 1358 erbaute Steg nachgebaut. Der Steg ist ca. 850 Meter lang und offenbart dem Pilger eine wunderbare Weitsicht über den Zürichsee. Ein unvergesslicher Abschnitt auf dem Jakobsweg durch die Schweiz.

Protaras, a seaside Resort in Cyprus

Before it starts snowing in Switzerland and the days are getting shorter, we have decided to spend a few days bathing in Protaras in Cyprus.

Protaras, as well as Agia Napa, are two seaside resorts in Cyprus that were built, following the demarcation and establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the 1970s, as a replacement for the resort of Famagusta. Politically, the city of Protaras which mainly consists of hotels, holiday homes, shops and restaurants, belongs to Paralimni. The quiet and family-friendly seaside resort is located on the sandy shores of the Cypriot Fig Tree Bay. The main attraction is, of course, the beautiful beach sloping gently into the sea; Protaras is an ideal place for experienced and less experienced swimmers and water sports enthusiasts.

Also, Protaras offers a very large selection of restaurants, bars and other entertainment offers for young and old. Further, there are plenty of boutiques and souvenir shops and the relatively reasonable prices are tempting to buy one or the other bargain 🙂

If you want to know more about the tourist attractions and offers, the friendly and knowledgeable Tourist Guides of the Cyprus Tourism Organization will gladly provide you with lots of useful information in the local Tourist Information Points which one can find all over the country. 

My overall rating for the holiday destination Cyprus is: gladly again! On this island one gets value for money; and the guests are meeting friendly and welcoming hosts!

Bevor es bei uns in der Schweiz zu schneien beginnt und die Tage kürzer werden, haben wir uns für einen kurzen Badeurlaub in Protaras auf Zypern entschieden.

Protaras, wie auch Agia Napa, sind zwei Badeorte in Zypern welche nach der Grenzziehung und Errichtung der Türkischen Republik Nordzypern in den 1970er Jahren als Ersatz für den nicht mehr zugänglichen Badeort Famagusta neu erschlossen wurden. Politisch gehört die Stadt Protaras aus Hotels, Ferienhäusern, Shops und Restaurants zu Paralimni. Das ruhige und familienfreundlich Protaras liegt an der sandigen Küste der zypriotischen Feigenbaumbucht. Die Hauptattraktion ist natürlich der herrliche leicht ins Meer abfallende Strand; Protaras ist ein idealer Badeort für erfahrene und weniger geübte Schwimmer und Wassersportler.

 

Auch abseits vom Strand bietet Protaras eine sehr grosse Auswahl an Restaurants, Bars und anderen Unterhaltungsmöglichkeiten für Jung und Alt. Boutiquen und Souvenir Shops gibt es hier im Überfluss und die relativ vernünftigen Preise können zum Kauf des einen oder anderen Schnäppchens verleiten 🙂

Visit Lucerne in Switzerland and cross the Chapel Bridge

Built in 1365, the Chapel Bridge, the landmark and one of the many tourist attractions of the city of Lucerne in Switzerland, is the oldest and second longest covered wooden bridge in Europe. In the gable of the bridge are triangular paintings from the 17th century, which represent important scenes of Swiss history. Every day, thousands of tourists from all over the world cross this bridge, which was largely destroyed and immediately rebuilt after a fire in 1993. For me, a visit of the city Lucerne would be inconceivable without crossing this wooden bridge over the river Reuss which connects the old with the former Neustadt Lucerne.

Die 1365 erbaute Kapellbrücke, das Wahrzeichen und eine der vielen Touristenattraktionen der Stadt Luzern in der Schweiz, ist die älteste und zweitlängste überdachte Holzbrücke Europas. Im Giebel der Brücke sind dreieckige Gemälde aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, die wichtige Szenen der Schweizer Geschichte darstellen. Jeden Tag überqueren tausende Touristen aus aller Welt die Brücke, die nach einem Brand 1993 weitgehend zerstört und sofort wieder aufgebaut wurde. Für mich wäre ein Besuch der Stadt Luzern undenkbar, ohne diese Holzbrücke über die Reuss zu überqueren verbindet das Alte mit der ehemaligen Neustadt Luzern.

Johannes Brahms House in Baden-Baden, Germany

Did you know that the ingenious German composer Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) composed or completed many of his famous works in a mansard apartment in Baden-Baden-Lichtenfeld during the summer months of 1865-1874? This lavish spa resort, not far from his apartment, was also home to his lifelong friend, composer and pianist Clara Schuhmann. The shingled house from the 19th century remained unchanged until today; and the living quarters of Johannes Brahms are nowadays a museum.

Wussten Sie, dass der geniale deutsche composer Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) während den Sommermonaten der Jahre 1865 bis 1874 in einer Mansarden Wohnung in Baden-Baden-Lichtenfeld viele seiner berühmten Werke komponierte oder vollendete. In diesem eleganten Kurort, nur unweit von seiner Wohnung entfernt, wohnte zu dieser Zeit ebenfalls seine lebenslange Freundin, die Komponistin und Pianistin Clara Schuhmann. Das schindelgedeckte Haus aus dem 19. Jahrhundert blieb bis zur heutigen Zeit unverändert; und die Wohnräume von Johannes Brahms sind heute ein Museum.
