Saatchi Gallery in London

What I did not know before my visit to the Saatchi Gallery in London was that the advertising magnate Charles Saatchi, who opened it in 1985, is in the background of this art gallery. The passionate art lover thus made his extensive collection accessible to a wide audience. Admission to all exhibitions is free for visitors and the gallery was pretty empty on Saturday when I was there. The gallery, or rather the museum, has an exhibition space of approximately 50,000 square meters and is located in the former headquarters of the Duke of York on King’s Road in the Chelsea district, near Sloane Square underground station. Impressive are not only the exhibited works but also the gallery itself. Someone took a historic building and turned it into one of the best museums in the world. The gallery has just the right size, the lighting is superb, the navigation inside is child’s play, the elevators are fast and comfortable. In short, the architecture is invisible, it serves the main purpose of exhibiting art and is not a self-staging of an architect.

Was ich vor meinem Besuch der Saatchi Galerie in London nicht wusste war, dass im Hintergrund dieser Kunststätte der Werbemagnat Charles Saatchi steht welcher sie 1985 eröffnete. Der passionierte Kunstliebhaber machte damit seine umfangreiche Sammlung einem breiten Publikum zugänglich. Der Eintritt zu allen Ausstellungen ist für die Besucher kostenlos und die Galerie war ziemlich leer am Samstag als ich dort war. Die Galerie oder besser gesagt das Museum hat eine Ausstellungsfläche von ungefähr 50.000 m² und befindet sich im ehemaligen Hauptquartier des Duke of York an der King’s Road im Stadtteil Chelsea in der Nähe der U-Bahn-Station Sloane Square. Beeindruckend sind nicht nur die ausgestellten Werke sondern auch die Galerie selbst. Jemand nahm ein historisches Gebäude und verwandelte es in eines der besten Museen der Welt. Die Galerie hat genau die richtige Grösse, die Beleuchtung ist hervorragend, die Navigation im Inneren ist ein Kinderspiel, die Aufzüge sind schnell und bequem. Kurz gesagt, die Architektur ist unsichtbar, sie dient dem Hauptzweck, Kunst auszustellen und ist keine Selbstinszenierung eines Architekten.

Tivoli Park in Copenhagen

Who does not know it, the Tivoli Park in Copenhagen. Every day, this world’s oldest amusement and recreation park offers fun, joy and entertainment for young and old alike. The Tivoli was opened on 15 August 1843. The leisure complex, decorated with flowerbeds and fountains, is located in the middle of Copenhagen between the main station and the town hall square. A detour to this park is a must for every visitor to Copenhagen! It offers something for everyone, over 30 carousels, children’s playground, concert halls and open-air show stage, shops, casinos, a wonderful park and around 50 restaurants ranging from fast food to gourmet style to traditional Danish cuisine. I liked it! The Tivoli Park is worth seeing in every season. In the spring with its floral splendor or at Christmas with the beautiful decorations and light installations. Have fun!

Wer kennt ihn nicht, den Tivoli Park in Kopenhagen. Täglich bietet dieser weltweit älteste Vergnügungs- und Erholungspark Freude, Spass und Unterhaltung für Jung und Alt. Eröffnet wurde der Tivoli am 15. August 1843. Die mit Blumenbeeten und Fontänen geschmückte Freizeitanlage befindet sich mitten in Kopenhagen zwischen dem Hauptbahnhof und dem Rathausplatz. Ein Abstecher zu diesem Park ist für jeden Besucher Kopenhagens ein Muss! Er bietet für jeden etwas, über 30 Karusselle, Kinderspielplatz, Konzertsäle und Open-Air Showbühne, Geschäfte, Kasinos, eine wunderbare Parkanlage und rund 50 Restaurants, die vom Fast Food über Gourmet-Stil bis zur traditionellen Dänischen Küche reichen. Mir hat’s geschmeckt! Der Tivoli Park ist zu jeder Jahreszeit sehenswert. Im Frühling mit seiner Blumenpracht oder auch zu Weihnachten mit den wunderschönen Dekorationen und Licht-Installationen. National Palace of Culture (NDK) in Sofia, Bulgaria

The monumental National Palace of Culture (NDK) is the most impressive building in the city center of the Bulgarian capital. In fact, it is the largest multifunctional complex in southeastern Europe. The NDK was opened in 1981 to commemorate the founding of the first Bulgarian state 1300 years ago. At the upper end of Vitosha Boulevard there is a large square and park from which you can see this dominant cultural palace. A visit to the building should not be missed, especially for socialist and communist architecture lovers, in the travel planning. On the front of this massive complex is a round ornament that looks like an eye, and the closer you approach the NDK you are feeling watched by “Big Brother” 🙂 The interior architecture is modern, but terrific, and the warm inviting literature Cafe is worth a short stop on your discovery tour through Sofia. You may also have the opportunity and time to attend one of the many concerts, festivals, exhibitions, fairs, etc. I am sure you will not regret it!

Das NDK wurde 1981 eröffnet, um an die Gründung des ersten bulgarischen Staates vor 1300 Jahren zu gedenken. Am oberen Ende des Vitosha Boulevard‘s befindet sich ein grosser Platz und Park, von dem aus Du diesen dominanten Kulturpalast sehen kannst. Eine Besichtigung des Gebäudes sollte vor allem für sozialistische und kommunistische Architekturliebhaber in deren Reiseplanung nicht fehlen. Auf der Vorderseite dieses massiven Komplexes befindet sich ein rundes Ornament, das wie ein Auge wirkt, und man fühlt sich je näher man sich dem NDK nähert von „Big Brother“ beobachtet 🙂 Die Architektur im Inneren ist modern, aber grandios, und das warme einladende Literatur Cafe ist auf Deiner Entdeckungstour durch Sofia eine kurze Einkehr wert. Vielleicht hast Du auch die Gelegenheit und Zeit eines der vielen Konzerte, Festivals, Ausstellungen, Messen, etc. zu besuchen. Ich bin überzeugt, Du wirst es nicht bereuen!

National Day in Switzerland

Switzerland celebrates its national day on the 1st of August. This day is not celebrated with a large military parade, as is customary in many other countries, but it is more of a contemplative and introspective occasion for the Swiss. Prayers for people and homeland, the singing of the national anthem and the ringing of church bells build in many communities the core of the ceremony. People decorate their homes with Swiss, cantonal and communal flags and in most places, the public buildings, squares and main streets are to be flagged by law. The official celebrations usually begin in the afternoon or early evening. In most communities, a public figure gives a speech and the local brass band plays the national anthem. At dusk, children light their lanterns and everywhere private or public fireworks are lit. The August fire, a burning pile of wood or the far-visible bonfires on mountain peaks and hills are part of every national day.

Die Schweiz feiert am 1. August ihren Nationalfeiertag. Dieser Tag wird nicht mit einer großen Militärparade gefeiert, wie es in vielen anderen Ländern üblich ist, sondern es ist eher ein besinnlicher in sich gekehrter Anlass für die Schweizer. Gebete für Volk und Vaterland, das Singen der Nationalhymne und das Geläut von Kirchenglocken gehört an vielen Orten zum jährliche Zeremoniell. Die Menschen schmücken ihre Häuser mit Schweizer-, Kantons- und Gemeindeflaggen und an den meisten Orten sind die öffentlichen Gebäude, Plätze und Hauptstraßen gesetzlich zu beflaggen. Die offiziellen Feierlichkeiten beginnen in der Regel am Nachmittag oder frühen Abend. In den meisten Gemeinden hält eine Person des öffentlichen Lebens eine Rede und die lokale Blaskapelle spielt die Nationalhymne. In der Dämmerung zünden Kinder ihre Lampions an und überall werden private oder öffentliche Feuerwerke abgebrannt. Das Augustfeuer, ein brennender Holzhaufen oder die weit sichtbaren Höhenfeuer auf Berggipfeln und Hügeln gehören zu jedem Nationalfeiertag.

Mercato Orientale in Genoa, Italy

The Mercato Orientale is recommended as one of the many attractions in Genoa. I love Italian specialties and my culinary fantasies are stimulated in such markets by the scents and color of the food offered. The Mercato is a bit hidden in the center of Genoa and was for me not immediately to find. The entrance to the market hall was promising but what came afterwards was rather disappointing. Based on the reports and photos I had hoped for much more. The choice of food is not overwhelming, neither the vegetables nor the fish is anything out of the ordinary and most stalls offer the same choices. The upper floor, which does not offer food, is also very modest. All in all, I would hardly visit this market anymore.

Der Mercato Orientale wird als eine der vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten in Genua empfohlen. Ich liebe italienische Spezialitäten und meine kulinarischen Fantasien werden auf solchen Märkten durch die Düfte und Farbenpracht der angebotenen Esswaren jeweils angeregt. Der Mercato liegt etwas versteckt im Zentrum von Genua und für mich war er nicht auf Anhieb zu finden. Der Eingang zur Markthalle war zwar vielversprechend aber was danach kam war eher enttäuschend. Anhand der Berichte und Fotos hatte ich mir viel mehr erhofft. Die Auswahl an Lebensmittel ist nicht überwältigend, weder beim Gemüse noch bei den Fischen gibt es etwas außergewöhnliches und die meisten Stände bieten die selbe Auswahl. Das obere Geschoss, dass nicht Lebensmittel bietet, ist ebenfalls sehr bescheiden. Alles in allem würde ich diesen Markt wohl kaum mehr besuchen.

My visit to the winery Dragomir in Plovdiv was a very special treat! I was invited by friends to taste and enjoy the different top wines of this relatively young winery. Honestly, I love good wine, but I would not call me a wine connoisseur or even „sommelier” 🙂 Anyway, I allow myself a judgment here. All savored Dragomir wines have tasted exceptionally well. By the way, did you know that the city of Plovdiv, together with the South-Italian town Matera, has been nominated cultural Capital of Europe for the year 2019.

Plovdiv, located in the Thracian Plain, with its “only” 350,000 inhabitants, is the second largest city of Bulgaria. The city, also known for its university, is located southeast of Sofia and can be reached by car in just under two hours. Train and bus lines, as well as a small airport, connect the world with Plovdiv which is one of the most important centers of the country for industry, trade and tourism. It was no coincidence that Bulgaria’s “Sleeping Beauty”, the city of Plovdiv, was named European Capital of Culture for this year. As you approach the city by car, you are crossing quarters with the same prefabricated buildings and houses as in many other socialist towns elsewhere. In the heart of Plovdiv, however, visitors will discover one of Europe’s oldest cities. Plovdiv, or Phillipopolis, was once the most beautiful city in Thrace. Today, it is also known as the “Bulgarian Rome”. When you stroll through the streets and alleyways of the Old Town, past the magnificent patrician houses from the time of the Bulgarian Renaissance, you will travel back in time through the history of Bulgaria. The Roman theater, the ancient stadium, the tombs, the third oldest mosque in the Balkans, the Archaeological Museum, and much more testify to a great past of this beautiful town.

Mein Besuch des Weinguts Dragomir in Plovdiv war ein ganz besonders Genusserlebnis! Unter dem Motto Degustieren und Geniessen durfte ich die verschieden Top-Weine dieses noch relativ jungen Weinguts verkosten. Freunde haben mich dazu eingeladen. Ganz ehrlich, ich liebe guten Wein, würde mich aber nicht als Weinkenner oder „Sommelier“ bezeichnen 🙂 Trotzdem erlaube ich mir hier ein Urteil. Alle von mir degustierten Linien der Dragomir Weine haben mir aussergewöhnlich gut gemundet. Die Weine waren schlicht hervorragend und ich freue mich jetzt schon auf meine nächste Reise nach Plovdiv! Übrigens wusstest Du, dass die Stadt Plovdiv zusammen mit der süd-italienischen Stadt Matera für das Jahr 2019 zur Kulturhauptstadt Europas ernannt wurde?

Die Stadt, auch bekannt für seine Universität, liegt südöstlich von Sofia und ist mit dem Auto in nur knapp zwei Stunden zu erreichen. Zug- und Buslinien sowie ein kleiner Flughafen verbinden die Welt mit Plovdiv, einem der wichtigsten Zentren des Landes für Industrie, Handel und Tourismus. Nicht umsonst wurde Bulgariens „schlafende Schönheit“, die Stadt Plovdiv zur diesjährigen Kulturhauptstadt Europas gekürt. Wenn man sich mit dem Auto der Stadt nähert, durchquert man Quartiere mit denselben Plattenbauten und Gebäuden wie in vielen anderen sozialistischen Einheitsstädten anderswo. Jedoch im Herzen der Stadt eröffnet sich den Besuchern eine der ältesten Städte Europas. Plovdiv oder auch Phillipopolis war einst die schönste Stadt Thrakiens und gilt heute auch als das „bulgarisches Rom“. Wer durch die Strassen und Gassen der Altstadt schlendert, vorbei an den prächtigen Bürgerhäuser aus der Zeit der bulgarischen Renaissance, unternimmt eine Zeitreise durch die Geschichte Bulgariens. Das römische Theater, das antike Stadion, die Grabstätten, die drittälteste Moschee des Balkans, das Archäologische Museum, und vieles mehr zeugen von einer grossen Vergangenheit dieser wunderschönen Stadt.

The Arsenale in Venice, Italy

Through the gate “Ingresso dall’acqua” navigated in the heydays of the Venetians their ships and galleys which were built in the Arsenale. The Arsenale is located in the Castello district. Since the 12th century it has been the shipyard and naval base of the mighty maritime republic of Venice. Before the age of industrialization, the Arsenale was Europe’s largest production facility and, with its various buildings, warehouses and port, a model for other naval arsenals in Europe. Also, the Arsenale was a symbol of the economic strength, politics and military power of the Republic of Venice. 

Since 1980, the Arsenale has become the venue for the Biennale on the occasion of the 1st International Architecture Exhibition. The same rooms with their infinitely long hallways are also used for the International Art Exhibition “La Biennale di Venedig” for the open space. 

The Giardini, a few hundred meters walk from the Arsenale is the traditional site of the „La Biennale di Venedig“ Art Exhibitions and hosts 29 pavillions of other countries which present „their“ artists once every two years to the visitors of this outstanding event in Venice. Bye the way, the Biennale has existed since 1895 and will again open the doors next year!

Durch das Tor “Ingresso dall’acqua” navigierten in der Blütezeit der Venezianer ihre Schiffe und Galeeren, die im Arsenale gebaut wurden. Das Arsenale befindet sich im Stadtteil Castello und ist seit dem 12. Jahrhundert Werft und Marinestützpunkt der mächtigen Seerepublik Venedig. Vor dem Zeitalter der Industrialisierung war das Arsenale Europas grösste Produktionsstätte und mit seinen verschiedenen Gebäuden, Lagerhallen und dem Hafen ein Vorbild für andere Marinearsenale in Europa. Das Arsenale war auch ein Symbol für die wirtschaftliche Stärke, Politik und militärische Macht der Republik Venedig.

Das Arsenale ist seit 1980 Schauplatz der Biennale anlässlich der 1. Internationalen Architekturausstellung. Die gleichen Räume mit ihren unendlich langen Räume werden auch für die Internationale Kunstausstellung “La Biennale di Venedig” ausserhalb des Gardini genutzt.

Die Giardini, ein paar hundert Meter vom Arsenale entfernt, ist der traditionelle Ort der Kunstausstellungen “La Biennale di Venedig” und beherbergt 29 Pavillons anderer Länder, die alle zwei Jahre den Besuchern dieser außergewöhnlichen Veranstaltung in Venedig „ihre“ Künstler vorstellen. Übrigens die Biennale existiert seit 1895 und im nächstes Jahr werden die Tore dieser Kunstausstellung wieder geöffnet!

Plowdiw, gelegen in der Thrakischen Ebene, ist mit seinen „nur“ 350’000 Einwohner die zweitgrösste Stadt von Bulgarian und ist für das Jahr 2019 neben Matera in Italien eine der beiden Kulturhauptstädte Europas. Die Stadt, auch bekannt für seine Universität, liegt südöstlich von Sofia und ist mit dem Auto in nur knapp zwei Stunden zu erreichen. Zug- und Buslinien sowie ein kleiner Flughafen verbinden die Welt mit Plovdiw, einem der wichtigsten Zentren des Landes für Industrie, Handel und Tourismus. Nicht umsonst wurde Bulgariens „schlafende Schönheit“, die Stadt Plovdiw zur diesjährigen Kulturhauptstadt Europas gekürt. Wenn man sich mit dem Auto der Stadt nähert, durchquert man Quartiere mit denselben Plattenbauten und Gebäuden wie in vielen anderen sozialistischen Einheitsstädten anderswo.

Jedoch im Herzen der Stadt eröffnet sich den Besuchern eine der ältesten Städte Europas. Plovdiw oder auch Phillipopolis war einst die schönste Stadt Thrakiens und gilt heute auch als das „bulgarisches Rom“. Wer durch die Strassen und Gassen der Altstadt schlendert, vorbei an den prächtigen Bürgerhäuser aus der Zeit der bulgarischen Renaissance, unternimmt eine Zeitreise durch die Geschichte Bulgariens. Das römische Theater, das antike Stadion, die Grabstätten, die drittälteste Moschee des Balkans, das Archäologische Museum, und vieles mehr zeugen von einer grossen Vergangenheit dieser wunderschönen Stadt.

„La Boule d’Or“ of Dieter Meier

A few days ago I travelled to Zurich by train. On the way to my meeting place with a friend, I walked through the great hall of the Zurich train station. And there, near the exit of the hall, in the direction of the river Limmat, is it, illuminated in a transparent shaft with the mass of about 50x50x30 cm, the gilded ball with the name “La Boule d’Or Centenaire”, which since May 9, 2008 is displayed for one hundred years. An art action by Dieter Meier, a successful Zurich musician (“Yellow” together with Boris Blank), entrepreneur and action artist. The ball is taken out of the shaft 8 times and rolled over a distance of 12 meters on the “Bois du voyage d’or”, the last time on May 9, 2108. Vor ein paar Tagen bin ich wieder einmal mit dem Zug nach Zürich gefahren. Auf dem Weg zu meinem Treffpunkt mit einem Freund ging ich durch die große Halle des Zürcher Bahnhofs. Und dort, nahe dem Ausgang der Halle, in Richtung Limmat, ist sie, beleuchtet in einem durchsichtigen Schacht mit den Massen von ca. 50x50x30 cm, die vergoldete Kugel mit dem Namen “La Boule d’Or Centenaire”, die seit dem 9. Mai 2008 für hundert Jahre ausgestellt wird. Eine Kunstaktion von Dieter Meier, ein erfolgreicher Zürcher Musiker (“Yellow” zusammen mit Boris Blank), Unternehmer und Aktionskünstler. Die Kugel wird 8 Mal aus dem Schacht genommen, und über eine Distanz von 12 Meter auf dem “Bois du voyage d’or” ausgerollt, das letzte Mal am 9. Mai 2108. The Saatchi Gallery in London

What I did not know before my visit to the Saatchi Gallery in London was that the advertising magnate Charles Saatchi, who opened it in 1985, is in the background of this art gallery. The passionate art lover thus made his extensive collection accessible to a wide audience. Admission to all exhibitions is free for visitors and the gallery was pretty empty on Saturday when I was there. The gallery, or rather the museum, has an exhibition space of approximately 50,000 square meters and is located in the former headquarters of the Duke of York on King’s Road in the Chelsea district, near Sloane Square underground station. Impressive are not only the exhibited works but also the gallery itself. Someone took a historic building and turned it into one of the best museums in the world. The gallery has just the right size, the lighting is superb, the navigation inside is child’s play, the elevators are fast and comfortable. In short, the architecture is invisible, it serves the main purpose of exhibiting art and is not a self-staging of an architect.

Was ich vor meinem Besuch der Saatchi Galerie in London nicht wusste war, dass im Hintergrund dieser Kunststätte der Werbemagnat Charles Saatchi steht welcher sie 1985 eröffnete. Der passionierte Kunstliebhaber machte damit seine umfangreiche Sammlung einem breiten Publikum zugänglich. Der Eintritt zu allen Ausstellungen ist für die Besucher kostenlos und die Galerie war ziemlich leer am Samstag als ich dort war. Die Galerie oder besser gesagt das Museum hat eine Ausstellungsfläche von ungefähr 50.000 m² und befindet sich im ehemaligen Hauptquartier des Duke of York an der King’s Road im Stadtteil Chelsea in der Nähe der U-Bahn-Station Sloane Square. Beeindruckend sind nicht nur die ausgestellten Werke sondern auch die Galerie selbst. Jemand nahm ein historisches Gebäude und verwandelte es in eines der besten Museen der Welt. Die Galerie hat genau die richtige Grösse, die Beleuchtung ist hervorragend, die Navigation im Inneren ist ein Kinderspiel, die Aufzüge sind schnell und bequem. Kurz gesagt, die Architektur ist unsichtbar, sie dient dem Hauptzweck, Kunst auszustellen und ist keine Selbstinszenierung eines Architekten.

Plovdiw – Europe‘s Capital of Culture

Plowdiw, located in the Thracian Plain, with its “only” 350,000 inhabitants, is the second largest city of Bulgaria and is next to the Italian town Matera one of the two cultural capitals of Europe for the year 2019. The city, also known for its university, is located southeast of Sofia and can be reached by car in just under two hours. Train and bus lines, as well as a small airport, connect the world with Plovdiw which is one of the most important centers of the country for industry, trade and tourism. It was no coincidence that Bulgaria’s “Sleeping Beauty”, the city of Plovdiw, was named European Capital of Culture for this year. As you approach the city by car, you are crossing quarters with the same prefabricated buildings and houses as in many other socialist towns elsewhere. In the heart of Plovdiw, however, visitors will discover one of Europe’s oldest cities. Plovdiw, or Phillipopolis, was once the most beautiful city in Thrace. Today, it is also known as the “Bulgarian Rome”. When you stroll through the streets and alleyways of the Old Town, past the magnificent patrician houses from the time of the Bulgarian Renaissance, you will travel back in time through the history of Bulgaria. The Arsenale in Venice, Italy

Through the gate “Ingresso dall’acqua” navigated in the heydays of the Venetians their ships and galleys which were built in the Arsenale. The Arsenale is located in the Castello district. Since the 12th century it has been the shipyard and naval base of the mighty maritime republic of Venice. Before the age of industrialization, the Arsenale was Europe’s largest production facility and, with its various buildings, warehouses and port, a model for other naval arsenals in Europe. Also, the Arsenale was a symbol of the economic strength, politics and military power of the Republic of Venice. 

Since 1980, the Arsenale has become the venue for the Biennale on the occasion of the 1st International Architecture Exhibition. The same rooms with their infinitely long hallways are also used for the International Art Exhibition “La Biennale di Venedig” for the open space. 

The Giardini, a few hundred meters walk from the Arsenale is the traditional site of the „La Biennale di Venedig“ Art Exhibitions and hosts 29 pavillions of other countries which present „their“ artists once every two years to the visitors of this outstanding event in Venice. Bye the way, the Biennale has existed since 1895 and will again open the doors next year!

Durch das Tor “Ingresso dall’acqua” navigierten in der Blütezeit der Venezianer ihre Schiffe und Galeeren, die im Arsenale gebaut wurden. Das Arsenale befindet sich im Stadtteil Castello und ist seit dem 12. Jahrhundert Werft und Marinestützpunkt der mächtigen Seerepublik Venedig. Vor dem Zeitalter der Industrialisierung war das Arsenale Europas grösste Produktionsstätte und mit seinen verschiedenen Gebäuden, Lagerhallen und dem Hafen ein Vorbild für andere Marinearsenale in Europa. Das Arsenale war auch ein Symbol für die wirtschaftliche Stärke, Politik und militärische Macht der Republik Venedig.

Das Arsenale ist seit 1980 Schauplatz der Biennale anlässlich der 1. Internationalen Architekturausstellung. Die gleichen Räume mit ihren unendlich langen Räume werden auch für die Internationale Kunstausstellung “La Biennale di Venedig” ausserhalb des Gardini genutzt.

Die Giardini, ein paar hundert Meter vom Arsenale entfernt, ist der traditionelle Ort der Kunstausstellungen “La Biennale di Venedig” und beherbergt 29 Pavillons anderer Länder, die alle zwei Jahre den Besuchern dieser außergewöhnlichen Veranstaltung in Venedig „ihre“ Künstler vorstellen. Übrigens die Biennale existiert seit 1895 und im nächstes Jahr werden die Tore dieser Kunstausstellung wieder geöffnet!

National Palace of Culture (NDK) in Sofia, Bulgaria

The monumental National Palace of Culture (NDK) is the most impressive building in the city center of the Bulgarian capital. In fact, it is the largest multifunctional complex in southeastern Europe. The NDK was opened in 1981 to commemorate the founding of the first Bulgarian state 1300 years ago. At the upper end of Vitosha Boulevard there is a large square and park from which you can see this dominant cultural palace. A visit to the building should not be missed, especially for socialist and communist architecture lovers, in the travel planning. On the front of this massive complex is a round ornament that looks like an eye, and the closer you approach the NDK you are feeling watched by “Big Brother” 🙂 The interior architecture is modern, but terrific, and the warm inviting literature Cafe is worth a short stop on your discovery tour through Sofia. You may also have the opportunity and time to attend one of the many concerts, festivals, exhibitions, fairs, etc. I am sure you will not regret it!

Der gewaltige Nationale Kulturpalast (NDK) ist das beeindruckendste Gebäude im Stadtzentrum der bulgarischen Hauptstadt. Tatsächlich ist es der grösste multifunktionale Komplex in Südosteuropa. Das NDK wurde 1981 eröffnet, um an die Gründung des ersten bulgarischen Staates vor 1300 Jahren zu gedenken. Am oberen Ende des Vitosha Boulevard‘s befindet sich ein grosser Platz und Park, von dem aus Du diesen dominanten Kulturpalast sehen kannst. Eine Besichtigung des Gebäudes sollte vor allem für sozialistische und kommunistische Architekturliebhaber in deren Reiseplanung nicht fehlen. Auf der Vorderseite dieses massiven Komplexes befindet sich ein rundes Ornament, das wie ein Auge wirkt, und man fühlt sich je näher man sich dem NDK nähert von „Big Brother“ beobachtet 🙂 Die Architektur im Inneren ist modern, aber grandios, und das warme einladende Literatur Cafe ist auf Deiner Entdeckungstour durch Sofia eine kurze Einkehr wert. Vielleicht hast Du auch die Gelegenheit und Zeit eines der vielen Konzerte, Festivals, Ausstellungen, Messen, etc. zu besuchen. Ich bin überzeugt, Du wirst es nicht bereuen!

Flea Market in the City-Center of Sofia, Bulgaria

In the City-center of Sofia, more precisely in front of the Aleksander Nevski Cathedral and opposite the Sveta Sofia Church, a permanent flea market takes place on a small green space and is open every day; on weekends it’s the busiest time! There, you will mainly meet Sofia visitors from abroad. Are you looking for an old typewriter, an antique musical instrument, matryoshkas, medals, jewelry or an old weapon? Whatever you are searching, you will find it here! A whole row of market stalls sell new and old paintings as well as innumerable icons. But above all, the numerous Nazi memorabilia stand out in this market. Anyone who wants to have an original edition of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” or intends to reward his grandfather with the “Iron Cross” will find it here. Also friends of Russian militaria will surely discover one or the other artifact such as medals and badges, steel helmets, military caps, water bottles or Lenin busts. Lovers of old cameras, typewriters, watches, radios, etc. will find rarities that may cost a fortune from your antique dealer at home. Trade and haggle for the price is “allowed” and it certainly makes more fun than to get hold of such Souvenirs through the Internet.

In der Innenstadt von Sofia, genauer gesagt vor der Aleksander-Nevski-Kathedrale und gegenüber der Sveta Sofia Kirche, findet auf einer kleinen Grünanlage ein dauerhafter Flohmarkt statt und ist an jedem Tag geöffnet, am Wochenende ist am meisten los. Man begegnet dort vor allem Sofia-Besucher aus dem Ausland. Suchen Sie eine alte Schreibmaschine, ein antikes Musikinstrument, Matroschkas, Medaillen, Schmuck oder eine alte Waffe? Wer sucht, der wird es hier finden! Eine ganze Zeile mit Marktständen verkauft neue und alte Gemälde sowie unzählige Ikonen. Vor allem aber stechen einem die zahlreichen Nazi-Memorabilia auf. Wer schon immer mal eine Originalausgabe von Hitlers „Mein Kampf“ besitzen oder den Grossvater nachträglich mit dem „Eisernen Kreuz“ auszeichnen möchte, der wird hier ebenfalls fündig. Auch Freunde Russischer Militaria werden hier sicher das eine oder andere Artefakt entdecken wie zum Beispiel Orden und Abzeichen, Stahlhelme, Militärkappen, Feldflaschen oder Lenin-Büsten. Liebhaber alter Kameras, Schreibmaschinen, Uhren, Radios oder Plattenspieler, etc. finden garantiert Raritäten die bei einem Antiquitäten-Händler zu Hause womöglich ein „Vermögen“ kosten. Handeln und Feilschen um den Preis ist „erlaubt“ und machen sicher mehr Spass als sich ein solches Souvenir im Internet zu ergattern.

Achtung: Die Verkäufer auf dem Flohmarkt sind Profis und kennen den Wert ihrer angebotenen Waren! Man sollte natürlich die Herkunft und Authentizität der Produkte und Kuriositäten kritisch hinterfragen, so manche Teile sind von minderer Qualität, eventuell kopiert und nachgemacht oder sogar Importware „made in China“. Auf jeden Fall, viel Vergnügen auf der Entdeckungsreise durch den Flohmarkt in Sofia 🙂
