Splügen – Hot Tip for Skiing and Hiking
The characteristic village of Splügen, with small palazzi and traditional „Walserhäuser“ is 1,457 meters above sea level, nestled in the Graubünden mountains, at the foot of the Splügen and San Bernardino passes. Splügen is on a connecting route in the Alps between northern Europe and Italy in the south. Both passes were already regularly used in Roman times. Trade goods were transported on pack animals and the village Splügen was an important trading center at that time. It experienced an economic climax with the completion of a commercial road („Kommerzialstrasse“) over the Splügen Pass in 1823, which, however ended abruptly with the commissioning of the Gotthard Railway in 1882. The most striking building in the village is the Hotel Bodenhaus, that was built in 1772. Over the centuries, the hotel has hosted many famous guests such as William Turner, Friedrich Nietzsche, Albert Einstein and Prince Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. Today Splügen is a small but fine ski area on the Pizzo Tambo and invites you to go hiking in summer where you can really relax away from the hustle and bustle.
Das charakteristische Dorf Splügen, mit kleinen Palazzi und traditionellen Waisenhäusern, liegt 1457 Meter über Meer, eingebettet in den Bündner Bergen, am Fusse der Pässe Splügen und San Bernardino. Splügen liegt an einer Verbindungsroute in den Alpen zwischen dem Norden Europas und Italien im Süden. Beide Pässe wurden schon zu Römerzeiten regelmässig begangen. Handelsgüter transportierte man auf Saumtieren und der Ort war damals ein wichtiger Warenumschlagplatz. Splügen erlebte mit der Fertigstellung einer Kommerzialstrasse über den Splügenpass im Jahre 1823 einen wirtschaftlichen Höhepunkt, welcher jedoch abrupt endete mit der Inbetriebnahme der Gotthardbahn im Jahre 1882. Das markanteste Gebäude im Ort ist das Hotel Bodenhaus welches 1772 erstellt wurde. Das Hotel beherbergte über die Jahrhunderte so manch berühmten Gast wie William Turner, Friedrich Nietzsche oder Prinz Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. Heute ist Splügen ein kleines aber feines Skigebiet am Pizzo Tambo und lädt im Sommer zum wandern ein wo man sich weit ab der Hektik so richtig gut erholen kann.

Estate Villa Villette in Cham, Switzerland
This afternoon I took a short walk in the fresh and clean air through the Park of the Villa Villette, built in the 19th century, in the south of the City Cham on Lake Zug. The extensive Park is worth a visit at any time of the year, the collection of rare trees is particularly interesting in this Estate.
Heute Nachmittag unternahm ich einen kleinen Spaziergang an der frischen und sauberen Luft durch die Parkanlage der im 19. Jahrhundert erbauten Villa Villette im Stadtsüden von Cham am Zugersee. Der weitläufige Parkanlage ist zu jeder Jahreszeit ein Besuch wert, besonders interessant in diesem Park ist die Sammlung seltener Bäume.
Paddle Steamer ,Stadt Luzern‘
The city of Lucerne is a paddle steamer on Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland. This beautiful steamer was built in 1928 and is the flagship of the Vierwaldstätter shipping company. The home port of this pearl among paddle steamers is the City of Lucerne. It is 64 meters long and 8 meters wide, has a water displacement of 431 tons and reaches a top speed of 26 km / h.
Die Stadt Luzern ist ein Schaufelraddampfer auf dem zentralschweizerischen Vierwaldstättersee. Gebaut wurde dieser wunderschöne Dampfer 1928 und ist das Flaggschiff der Vierwaldstätter Schifffahrtsgesellschaft. Der Heimathafen dieser Perle unter den Schaufelraddampfern ist die Stadt Luzern. Sie ist 64 Meter lang und 8 Meter breit, hat eine Wasserverdrängung von 431 Tonnen und erreicht eine Spitzengeschwindigkeit von 26 km/h.

Bonfires in Switzerland
Bonfires are burning wooden cones piled meters high, which were ignited as signal fires on hills our mountains and were visible from afar. A system of these high-altitude fires had existed in Switzerland since the 15th century, which was massively expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries, analogous to today’s 5G networks. At that time, these Bonfires were mainly military signal stations and the whole of Switzerland could be alerted within just a few hours. In ancient times, these bonfires were already one of the dominant communication technologies among the Persians, Greeks and Romans. Anyway, the bonfires have a long tradition in Switzerland and are lit on August 1st, the national holiday, hence the name 1st August fire.
Höhenfeuer sind meterhoch aufgeschichtete, brennende Holzkegel, welche auf Anhöhen als Signalfeuer entzündet wurden und von weither sichtbar waren. In der Schweiz bestand seit dem 15. Jahrhundert ein System von diesen Höhenfeuern welches im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert, analog der heutigen 5G Netze, massiv ausgebaut wurde. Damals handelte es sich bei diesen Höhenfeuern hauptsächlich um militärische Signalstationen und man konnte innerhalb von nur ein paar wenigen Stunden die gesamte Schweiz alarmieren. In der Antike waren diese Höhenfeuer bereits bei den Persern, Griechen und Römern eine der dominierenden Kommunikationstechniken. Jedenfalls haben die Höhenfeuer in der Schweiz eine lange Tradition und werden am 1. August, dem Nationalfeiertag, entzündet, daher der Name 1. August Feuer.
Mountain Pilatus

Heute Freitag morgen, ein Blick über den Zugersee auf den Berg Pilatus. Der Pilatus ist ein Bergmassiv in der Zentralschweiz südlich von der Stadt Luzern. Der höchste Punkt des Berges ist das Tomlishorn mit einer Höhe von 2128 Meter über Meer.
Snow
Finally, today it started to snow slightly in Zug. The Zug castle, which dates back to the 11th century, is covered with a thin layer of powder snow. Maybe winter will come after all! I wish everyone a nice Thursday!
Endlich, heute hat es in Zug leicht zu schneien begonnen. Die Zuger Burg deren Anfänge ins 11. Jahrhundert zurück reichen ist von einer dünnen Puderschicht Schnee bedeckt. Vielleicht kommt der Winter doch noch! Ich wünsche allen einen schönen Donnerstag!
Where is the Snow?
With climate change, the winters in Switzerland are demonstrably warmer, at least in the plains, and the snow is overdue! This affects the number of snow days and to be able to ski you have to go up into the mountains. More recent evaluations show a significant decrease in the amount of snow for Central Europe. If this continues, there will be no more snow in a few decades!
Mit dem Klimawandel werden die Winter in der Schweiz zumindest im Flachland nachweislich wärmer und der Schnee ist überfällig! Dies beeinflusst die Anzahl der Schneetage und um Skifahren zu können, muss man in die Berge fahren. Neuere Auswertungen zeigen einen deutlichen Rückgang der Schneemenge für Mitteleuropa. Wenn das so weitergeht, wird es in ein paar Jahrzehnten keinen Schnee mehr geben!
Ägerital – Central Switzerland

A wonderful path for everyone who is looking for relaxation, you can of course divide the hiking pleasure into shorter sections.
Im Herzen der Zentralschweiz liegt eingebettet in einzigartiger Natur das Ägerital. Es erstreckt sich von Sattel im Osten bis nach Unterägeri im Westen. Das Ägerital ist bekannt für seine nebelarme Lage und reine Luft. Ein Panoramoweg führt über 18 km von Unterägeri auf den Höhen des Ägerisees bis nach Morgarten. Ein traumhafter Weg für alle die Erholung suchen, man kann den Wandergenuss natürlich auch in kürzere Teilstrecken aufteilen.
Christmas Market – Montreux Noël
Year after year, the Christmas market in Montreux on Lake Geneva. This market extends along the lake promenade, which is festively illuminated and decorated especially for the event. By the way, this Christmas market is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. For one month, over 170 traders, craftsmen and landlords are housed in romantically lit chalets on the lakeshore. Montreux Noël offers events, activities and culinary delights for all age groups!
All Jahre wieder, der Weihnachtsmarkt in Montreux am Genfersee. Dieser Markt erstreckt sich entlang der Seepromenade, welche eigens für die Veranstaltung festlich beleuchtet und dekoriert wird. Übrigens dieser Weihnachtsmarkt gilt als einer der schönsten in Europa. Einen Monat lang sind am Seeufer über 170 Händler, Handwerker und Wirte in romantisch beleuchteten Chalets untergebracht. Montreux Noël bietet für alle Altersgruppen Veranstaltungen, Aktivitäten und kulinarische Genüsse!
The Beehive – das Bienenhäuschen
My grandfather’s beehive was and still is a place of peace and contemplation. The lush fir trees around the house were “Christmas trees” in my youth, which “survived” the annual cut on December 24th!

Das Bienenhäuschen meines Großvaters war und ist immer noch ein Ort der Ruhe und Besinnung. Die üppigen Tannen rund um das Häuschen waren in meiner Jugend “Weihnachtsbäume”, die den alljährlichen Schnitt am 24. Dezember “überlebten”!

The „Lindenhof“ in Zurich, Switzerland
Yesterday, the time has come again for me to travel to Zurich; I had a lunch appointment with one of my friends! Since I had one hour left until our scheduled lunch, I decided to use this hour for a stroll through the streets of the old town, along the river Limmat and up to the Lindenhof hill. From there one has an impressive view, in the middle of the historic center of the city of Zurich, across the Limmat and the Limmatquai on the right bank of the old town, the Zurich Niederdorf.
Based on archaeological finds it is assumed that the Lindenhof had already been inhabited in the Bronze Age. Later, that is to say in Roman times and during the early Middle Ages, fortifications where built up there to protect the inhabitants of Turicum, now the city of Zurich. In the late Middle Ages, an imperial Palatinate towered from the Lindenhof over the city.
With the demolition of the former imperial residence in 1218, the Lindenhof transformed into a green, tree-lined recreation area within the city walls of Zurich. Shooting competitions, festivities and the chess play were just a few of the traditional activities of that time. Also, the heartbreaker and women conqueror, Giacomo Casanova discovered the tranquility and beauty of this leafy open space during his visit to Zurich in the year 1760 🙂
Today, the Lindenhof is one of the most famous places and leisure areas in the heart of the city of Zurich and is visited daily by peace seekers, tourists and city strollers like me.

Gestern war es wieder einmal soweit, eine Verabredung mit einem Freund brachte mich in die Stadt Zürich; ein gemeinsames Mittagessen war angesagt! Da mir bis zu unserem Treffen noch eine Stunde Zeit verblieb, entschied ich mich für einen kleinen Spaziergang durch die Gassen der Altstadt, entlang des Flusses Limmat und hinauf auf den Lindenhof. Von dieser Anhöhe hat man eine beeindruckende Aussicht inmitten des historischen Kerns der Stadt Zürich über die Limmat und das Limmatquai hinweg auf die rechtsufrige Altstadt, dem Zürcher Niederdorf.
Anhand archäologischer Funde wird angenommen, dass der Lindenhof bereits in der Bronzezeit bewohnt gewesen sein musste. Später, das heisst zur Zeit der Römer und während des Frühmittelalters standen an diesem Ort Befestigungsanlagen und Fluchtburgen für die Bewohner der Stadt Turicum, dem heutigen Zürich. Im Spätmittelalter wurden in der kaiserlichen Pfalz am Lindenhof Reichstage und Festlichkeiten abgehalten.

Mit dem Abbruch der einstigen kaiserlichen Residenz im Jahre 1218 wandelte sich der Lindenhof in einen begrünten, mit Bäumen bepflanzten Erholungsraum innerhalb der Zürcher Stadtmauern. Schützenfeste, Festivitäten und das Schachspiel waren nur ein paar wenige überlieferte Aktivitäten jener Zeit. Im Jahre 1760 entdeckte auch Giacomo Casanova der Herzensbrecher und Fraueneroberer die Ruhe und Schönheit dieses begrünten Freiraums 🙂
Heute gilt der Lindenhof als einer der bekanntesten Plätze und Freizeitflächen im Herzen der Stadt Zürich und wird täglich von Ruhesuchenden, Touristen und Städtebummler wie ich besucht.

Stagecoach over the Gotthard
The Gotthard Pass has been one of the most important direct north-south links across the Alps since the Middle Ages. In 1830, the first stagecoach rolled over the Gotthard Pass. At that time, the travelers were predominantly merchants, scientists, engineers and diplomats. Back then, in the first half of the 19th century, the passengers felt the thirty-hour journey from Lucerne to Milan, first with the steamboat across Lake Lucerne to Flüelen and then in the stagecoach over the St. Gotthard Pass to Camerlata and Milan as grueling strain. In 1850, the effective travel time from Zurich to Milan was at least 30 hours, not taking into account an overnight stay in the hospice on the Gotthard Pass. With the opening of the Gotthard railway tunnel in 1882 the stagecoaches slowly disappeared; and the stagecoach operation was finally discontinued in 1926. The steam-powered train reduced the travel time from Zurich to Milan to 11 hours, today’s trains need only 3 hours and 25 minutes for the route, thanks to the 57-kilometer Gotthard Base Tunnel, i.e. the longest tunnel in the world. In 2020, after completion of the railway tunnel through the Monte Ceneri, the train journey will be shortened by another 40 minutes to 2 hours and 45 minutes! By the way, in 1852 about 21‘000 passengers used the stagecoach service over the Alps. Today, on average 12‘000 travelers are using trains through the Gotthard Tunnel!

Der Gotthardpass ist seit dem Mittelalter eine der wichtigsten direkten Nord-Süd-Verbindungen über die Alpen. Im Jahre 1830 rollte die erste Postkutsche über den Gotthardpass. Die Reisenden zu jener Zeit waren vorwiegend Kaufleute, Wissenschaftler, Ingenieure und Diplomaten. Damals, in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, empfanden die Passagiere die dreissig Stündige Reise von Luzern nach Mailand, zuerst mit dem Dampfschiff über den Vierwaldstättersee nach Flüelen und dann in der Postkutsche über den Sankt Gotthardpass nach Camerlata und Mailand als aufreibende Strapaze. Eine Übernachtung im Hospiz auf dem Gotthardpass nicht eingerechnet, betrug im Jahr 1850 die effektive Reisezeit ab Zürich nach Mailand mindestens 30 Stunden. Mit der Eröffnung des Gotthard-Eisenbahntunnels 1882 verschwanden die Postkutschen langsam; und der Postkutschenbetrieb wurde 1926 endgültig eingestellt. Die dampfbetriebene Bahn verkürzte die Reisezeit von Zürich nach Mailand auf 11 Stunden, die heutigen Züge benötigen für die Strecke, Dank des 57 Kilometer langen Gotthard-Basistunnels, nur noch 3 Stunden und 25 Minuten. Ab dem Jahr 2020, nach Fertigstellung des Eisenbahntunnels durch den Monte Ceneri wird die Zugreise um eine weitere halbe Stunde auf 2 Stunden und 45 Minuten verkürzt! Übrigens nutzten 1852 rund 21’000 Passagiere den Postkutschen-Service über die Alpen. Heute fahren durchschnittlich 12’000 Reisende mit Zügen durch das Gotthardmassiv!

The Flower Watch in Geneva, Switzerland
The city of Geneva is located on the western shores of Lake Geneva and is a magnet for business people, diplomats and tourists from all over the world. For me too, Geneva has a certain magical power which from time to time comes over me and I have to visit this fascinating city at the river Rhône. The day before yesterday, the time has come again and I traveled to Geneva, the city of banks, diplomats and watches. Yesterday I wrote a post about the place where Elisabeth, the Empress of Austria, was murdered in 1898. On my way to this historic spot at the landing stage for paddle steamers on the Quai du Montblanc I strolled through the „English Garden“ on the opposite side of the lake.
There, at the entrance to the park, at a busy intersection, is the world-famous flower watch, a tribute to the long and rich watchmaking tradition in Geneva. This flower watch with the name “Horloge Fleurie” is a unique technical and horticultural work of art with radio-controlled time; in its kind, it is unique in the world. Considering the rush of tourists, it must be the city’s most frequently photographed landmark! In any case, this watch with it‘s thousands and different colored flowers impressed me! I hope you love it as well!
Die schöne Rhone Stadt Genf liegt am westlichen Ufer des Genfer See’s und ist Anziehungspunkt für Geschäftsleute, Diplomaten und Touristen aus aller Welt. Auch für mich hat Genf eine gewisse magische Kraft welcher ich von Zeit zu Zeit nicht mehr widerstehen kann. Vorgestern war es dann wieder einmal so weit und ich habe mich aufgemacht nach Genf, die Stadt der Banken, Diplomaten und Uhren. Ich berichtete gestern über die Stelle wo die Kaiserin von Österreich 1898 ermordet wurde. Auf meinem Weg zu diesem historischen Ort bei der Bootsanlegestelle für Raddampfer am Quai du Montbkanc bin ich auf der gegenüberliegenden Seeseite durch den Englischen Garten geschlendert.
Horologe Fleurie – Flower Watch in the English Garden, Geneva
Dort am Eingang zum Park, an einer stark befahrenen Kreuzung, befindet sich die weltberühmte Blumenuhr, eine Hommage an die lange und reiche Uhrmachertradition in Genf. Diese Blumenuhr mit dem Namen “Horloge Fleurie” ist ein einmaliges technisches und gartenbauliches Kunstwerk mit funkgesteuerter Zeit; in ihrer Art ist sie einmalig auf der ganzen Welt. Wahrscheinlich ist diese Blumenuhr, am Andrang der Touristen zu urteilen, das am häufigsten fotografierte Wahrzeichen der Stadt! Auf jeden Fall hat auch mich diese, mit tausenden von verschiedenfarbigen Blumen gestaltete Uhr entzückt! Ich hoffe, auch euch gefällt das Video dieser Blumenuhr!

Hammetschwand Lift, Buergenstock
At the End of the 19th century, the noble Bürgenstock Hotels, with an incomparably beautiful view of Lake Lucerne, were a popular holiday resort for wealthy people, princes and kings from all over the world. Since August 2017, after completing a nine-year planning and construction period, the Bürgenstock Resort has been shining with new splendor and with its many buildings, hotels and restaurants, it is Switzerland’s largest integrated hotel complex.
A very special attraction on the Bürgenstock is the footpath hewn into the rock. The path begins at a small chapel where actress Audrey Hepburn married to Mel Ferrer more than 60 years ago. It leads along the northern flank of the Bürgenstock, which slopes steeply down to Lake Lucerne.
Footpath to Hammetschwand Lift
It was a beautiful autumn day, with a wonderful view over Lake Lucerne. The destination of my walk yesterday was the Hammetschwand lift. From the Känzeli, where the path ends, an open outdoor lift to the Hammetschwand was built as a further attraction over one hundred years ago.
The French built the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Swiss the 153 meter high outdoor lift up to the Hammetschwand on the Bürgenstock 🙂 The ride up there takes almost a minute and from the elevator cabin sweeps the view over the five hundred meters lower Lake Lucerne, across to the mountain Rigi, the city of Lucerne and central Switzerland.
Der Nobelkurort Bürgenstock, mit einer unvergleichlich schönen Aussicht auf den Vierwaldstättersee war Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts ein beliebter Ferienort für Wohlhabende, Fürsten und Könige aus aller Welt. Seit August 2017, nach Beendigung einer neunjährigen Planungs- und Bauzeit, strahlt das Bürgenstock Resort wieder in neuem Glanz und ist mit seinen vielen Gebäuden, Hotels und Restaurants die grösste integrierte Hotelanlage der Schweiz.
Eine ganz besondere Attraktion auf dem Bürgenstock ist der in den Fels gehauene Spazierweg. Der Weg beginnt vor einer kleinen Kapelle wo sich die Schauspielerin Audrey Hepburn mit Mel Ferrer vor über 60 Jahren verheiratete und führt entlang der zum Vierwaldstättersee steil abfallenden Nordflanke des Bürgenstock.
Lake Lucerne
Es war ein wunderschöner Herbsttag, mit einer herrlichen Weitsicht über den Vierwaldstättersee. Das Ziel meines gestrigen Spaziergangs auf diesem Felsenweg war der Hammetschwand Lift. Vom Känzeli, wo der Weg endet, wurde vor über hundert Jahren als weitere Attraktion ein offener Aussenlift zum Hammetschwand gebaut. Die Franzosen bauten den Eiffelturm in Paris und die Schweizer den 153 Meter hohen Hammetschwand Aussenlift am Bürgenstock 🙂 Die Fahrzeit auf den Hammetschwand dauert knapp eine Minute und aus der Liftkabine schweift der Blick auf den den fünfhundert Meter tiefer gelegene Vierwaldstättersee, hinüber zum Berg Rigi, die Stadt Luzern und die Zentralschweiz.

The „Eidgenössische Schwing- und Aelplerfest“ in Zug, Switzerland
The Federal Wrestler and Alpin Festival (“Eidgenössische”) is one of the biggest sporting events in Switzerland and takes place every three years in another part of the country. The Swiss national sports „Schwingen“ (a form of wrestling), „Hornussen“ (a mixture of golf and baseball) and „Steinstossen“ (Stone putt) are practiced, with the wrestling sport at the center of this traditional event. The host this year is the canton of Zug from 23 to 25 August.
Parade in Zug
The start of the “Eidgenössische“ was opened yesterday Friday with the inauguration of the festival area, the flag reception in the old town of Zug and the subsequent big parade through the city to the Arena (with a capacity for 56’000 spectators). Tens of thousands of enthusiastic spectators witnessed a fantastic parade with a lot of tradition, customs and guests of honor including the president of Switzerland! The organizers of this event expect up to half a million visitors this weekend. More to follow soon 🙂
Eidgenössische Schwing und Aelpler Fest
Das Eidgenössische Schwing- und Aelplerfest („das Eidgenössische“) ist einer der grössten Sportanlässe der Schweiz und findet alle drei Jahre an einem anderen Ort des Landes statt. Dabei werden die Schweizer Nationalsportarten Schwingen (Ringen) Hornussen und Steinstossen ausgeübt, wobei der Schwingsport im Zentrum dieses traditionellen Anlasses steht. Gastgeber in diesem Jahr ist vom 23. bis 25. August der Kanton Zug. Der Start zum „Eidgenössischen“ ist gestern Freitag mit der Eröffnung des Festareals, dem Fahnenempfang in der Altstadt Zug und dem anschliessenden grossen Festumzug durch die Stadt zur Schwingarena (mit einem Fassungsvermögen von 56’000 Zuschauern) eröffnet worden. Zehntausende von begeisterten Zuschauern waren Zeugen eines fantastischen Festumzuges mit viel Tradition, Brauchtum und Ehrengästen! Die Organisatoren des „Eidgenössischen“ erwarten dieses Wochenende bis zu einer halben Million Besucher. Mehr in einem der nächsten Posts 🙂

Pacific Northwest, United States of America
This is a great summertime trip for retirees. While it is a common perception that this area has perpetual rain, there are great areas here to visit that buck that understanding. Located on the northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula, towns like Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend are located in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. Sequim, which is located in the center of that rain shadow, receives only 14 inches of rain per year. The vast majority of that rain falls between October and April. The weather in peak season between June and September is absolutely delightful. It is sunny with low humidity and temps in the 70’s to low 80’s (21 – 26 centigrade). This is one reason Sequim has been ranked as one of the best small towns in the pacific northwest to live. It is also a very popular destination for west coast residents to move to for retirement.
The towns here are quaint seaside towns, particularly Sequim and Port Townsend. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful, with the Olympic National Park just to the southwest. Port Townsend has a great walkable downtown area with nice restaurants and a first-rate farmer market every weekend. The nearby Fort Worden State Park is a former military installation where many of the buildings have been converted to art facilities. This is a great place to learn art from traditional painting to advanced woodworking.
The area is also a gateway to Seattle, the San Juan Islands and Victoria, BC, which is a short ferry ride from Port Angeles. This area makes a great standalone trip. A visit here can be months long without running out of things to do.

Mediterranen Coast, Spain and other European Countries
The Mediterranean Coast if Spain is a great location for an overseas retiree RV trip. Spain is often listed as one of the best places for US residents to retire on a budget. It has excellent culture, is generally friendly to foreigners, and sports a relatively low cost of living. The EU also has very streamlined travel regulations between nations, so it makes a great base camp to venture out and explore other EU member states and Switzerland.
RVing in Europe is typically done in smaller campervans than those you may be used to in the US. These RVs are designed to navigate the smaller roads in Europe and provide only the basic services you really need to live. A place to cook, a place to sleep and maybe a bathroom, although those are less common. The lack of RV amenities are made up for by the lifestyle in the area. The RV is truly just a place to sleep, the surrounding cities, towns and beaches will provide all amenities, activities and entertainment you could possibly ask for.
Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Malaga are all excellent destinations. Each could be a standalone destination, or a coastal trip covering all of them is certainly possible. Peak season is in the spring and summer, but the weather is mild year-round so off-season trips can still be great while avoiding the crowds.

The southern US is a great retirement RV destination. The weather is fantastic year-round so you can plan your trip at any time. While the southern US as a whole is a great retirement RV destination, the desert southwest stands out for a number of reasons. First, it has great weather. Not only is it generally warm, but also generally very dry. The lack of humidity does three things. First, it makes the warmer temps feel more pleasant. Second, when the sun goes down the temps tend to cool faster, making sleeping more pleasant. Finally, drier air is easier to breath and can be beneficial for a number of health conditions common in the retired community.
The desert southwest is also less crowded then places like Florida during the snowbird season and the cost of living is generally lower. There are other places in the south that are also less crowded then Florida, like Alabama, Louisiana and Texas. These are all great areas in their own right, but the desert southwest gets the edge for its better weather and greater prevalence of free or cheap camping opportunities.
From Palm Springs, CA east to New Mexico there is a great mix of cities and towns with a broad range of cultural and entertainment facilities. These areas are surrounded by camping facilities ranging from vast free boondocking areas to massive high-end resorts. The diversity here will allow any retiree to live exactly as they desire.

Kartause Ittingen Thurgau
The Charterhouse (Kartause) Ittingen is for me one of the most beautiful places between Zurich and Lake Constance. The Charterhouse is a former Carthusian monastery in the municipality Warth, near Frauenfeld, in the Swiss canton of Thurgau. In the old walls, Carthusian monks dedicated their lives to God. Simple were their cells, the more magnificent their church, in the jubilant Rococo style. In the Charterhouse there is plenty of space for meetings and seminars. Look forward to a stylish hotel, a cozy cellar bar and a large restaurant with seasonal offers from the region and the many homemade specialties. The famous Ittinger Bräu, a top-class Amber beer, is undoubtedly a must when visiting the monastery 🙂 The large complex also includes two museums, the Ittinger Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Canton of Thurgau. For nature and garden lovers, the Kartause Ittingen is also an interesting place! In addition to the gardens, visitors can extend their walk through the monastery gardens for a walk around the Charterhouse and the surrounding forests and vineyards. And last but not least, the monastery shop with its many regional delicacies is worthwhile a visit! Enjoy!

Die Kartause Ittingen ist für mich einer der schönsten Orte zwischen Zürich und dem Bodensee. Die Kartause ist ein ehemaliges Kartäuserkloster in der Gemeinde Warth bei Frauenfeld im Schweizer Kanton Thurgau. In den alten Mauern widmeten Kartäusermönche ihr Leben Gott. Einfach sind ihre Zellen, umso prächtiger ihre Kirche, im jubelnden Stil des Rokoko. In der Kartause gibt es viel Platz für Tagungen und Seminare. Freue Dich auf ein stilvolles Hotel, eine gemütliche Kellerbar und ein grosses Restaurant mit saisonalen Angeboten aus der Region und den vielen hausgemachten Spezialitäten. Das berühmte Ittinger Bräu, ein Amberbier der Extraklasse, gehört ohne Zweifel zu jedem “Klosterbesuch” 🙂
