It’s now exactly one year since the category 5 hurricane Irma dragged across the Leeward Islands with its destructive power. Irma raged very brutally on the island of St. Martin (Sint Maarten). During the course of September 6, 2017, this monster hurricane named Irma moved across St. Martin, St. Barth, and Barbuda, as well as over the islands of Ginger Island and Tortola, which belong to the British Virgin Islands. I visited some of these islands in April this year and was shocked by what I saw. Whole rows of houses, public buildings, hotels, airports, cars, anchored ships and much more were literally blown away and totally destroyed by Irma. Especially terrible are the many people who died in this terrible hurricane!

My sad conclusion, from Grand Case airport in St. Martin to the town Marigot, from Philippsburg, the capital of Sint Maarten to Princess Juliana airport, on St. Barth and Anguilla, the traces of Irma are not only still very visible, but also require a complete reconstruction.

It was evident to me that the island of St. Martin, in contrast to St. Barth and Anguilla, was still very prominent and particularly weakened. Reconstruction, both in quality and quantity, is an immense challenge for the people of these islands. The recruitment of skilled workers and the supply of building materials through the ports, in my view, requires extraordinary and admirable logistical efforts.
And now, in September, it’s time again! Forecasts for the upcoming hurricane season in the North Atlantic and the Caribbean will produce similar levels of hurricanes as the long-term annual average according to projections from various institutions. The US weather agency NOAA assumes in their official forecast between 5 to 9 hurricanes. However, their intensity, compared to last year, is not expected in the same strength. Nevertheless, the uncertainty is high, a single cyclone in the wrong place can cause extreme damage, as in the example of Irma. Hopefully the heavily battered Caribbean islands will be spared major damage this year.

Es ist jetzt genau ein Jahr vergangen seit der Kategorie-5-Hurrikan Irma mit seiner zerstörerischen Kraft über die Leeward-Inseln hinweg zog. Ganz brutal wütete Irma auf der Insel St. Martin (Sint Maarten). Im Verlauf des 6. September 2017 zog dieses Ungetüm namens Irma über St. Martin, St. Barth und Barbuda sowie über die zu den Britischen Jungferninseln gehörenden Inseln Ginger Island und Tortola hinweg. Ich besuchte einige dieser Inseln im April dieses Jahres und war schockiert von dem was ich gesehen habe. Ganze Häuserzeilen, öffentliche Gebäude, Hotels, Flughäfen, Autos, vor Anker liegende Schiffe und vieles mehr wurde buchstäblich vom Winde verweht und total zerstört. Besonders schrecklich sind die vielen Toten die diesem schrecklichen Wirbelsturm zum Opfer gefallen sind!

Die von mir im Blog gezeigten Bilder habe ich auf den Inseln St. Barth und St. Martin (Sint Maarten) geschossen.
Mein trauriges Fazit, vom Flughafen Grand Case bis zur Stadt Marigot, von Philippsburg, der Hauptstadt von Sint Maarten bis zum Flughafen Princess Juliana, auf St. Barth und Anguilla sind die Spuren von Irma nicht nur immer noch sehr sichtbar, sondern erfordern auch einen kompletten Wiederaufbau.
Es war für mich evident, dass die Insel St. Martin, im Gegensatz zu St. Barth und Anguilla immer noch sehr markant und besonders geschwächt war. Der Wiederaufbau ist beides in Qualität und Quantität eine immense Herausforderung für die Menschen auf diesen Inseln. Die Rekrutierung benötigter Fachkräfte und der Nachschub der Baumaterialien über die Häfen erfordert meines Erachtens aussergewöhnliche und bewundernswerte logistische Anstrengungen.

Und jetzt im September ist es wieder soweit! Die Vorhersagen für die anstehende Hurrikan Saison im Nordatlantik und der Karibik wird nach bisher vorliegenden Prognosen verschiedener Institute ähnlich viele Hurrikane hervorbringen wie im langfristigen Durchschnitt. Die US-Wetterbehörde NOAA geht in ihrer offiziellen Vorhersage von einer Spanne zwischen 5 und 9 Hurrikanen aus und deren Intensität, im Vergleich zum letzten Jahr, wird jedoch nicht in gleicher Stärke erwartet. Nichtsdestotrotz, die Unsicherheit ist gross, ein einziger Wirbelsturm am falschen Ort, kann wie am Beispiel von Irma extreme Schäden verursachen. Deshalb ist zu hoffen, dass die schwer gebeutelten Karibikinseln dieses Jahr von grösseren Schäden verschont bleiben.
