White Truffles – Piedmont Region in Italy

Neive is an Italian commune with 3,500 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, in the Langhe region of Piedmont. Neive is known above all for the cultivation of vines for the Dolcetto d’Alba and the Nebbiolo grape that is used for the production of the Barolo or its “little brother” the Barbaresco. For me, Neive is an ideal starting point for my hiking and gourmet holidays. Why am I writing this post now, with a photo taken in the fall, more specifically in October of last year? Because it is not too late in spring to book a hotel room for the time of the white truffle (Tartufo Bianca del Piemonte). The month of October is the time for a culinary journey to this region by gourmets of the Piedmontese cuisine and the white truffle from all over the world. A visit to the International White Truffle Fair in the city of Alba, not far from Neive, is another highlight for lovers of the white truffle. Therefore, reserve now 🙂

Neive ist eine italienische Gemeinde mit 3.500 Einwohnern in der Provinz Cuneo, in der Langhe Region im Piemont. Neive ist vor allem für den Anbau von Reben für den Dolcetto d’Alba und die Nebbiolo-Traube für die Produktion des Barolo oder seines “kleinen Bruders” des Barbaresco bekannt. Für mich ist Neive ein idealer Ausgangspunkt für meine Wander- und Gourmetferien. Warum schreibe ich diesen Beitrag jetzt, mit einem Foto gemacht im Herbst, genauer gesagt im Oktober letzten Jahres? Weil es im Frühling nicht zu spät ist, ein Hotelzimmer für die Zeit des weißen Trüffels (Tartufo Bianca del Piemonte) zu buchen. Der Monat Oktober ist die Zeit für eine kulinarische Reise in diese Region von Gourmets der piemontesischen Küche und der weißen Trüffel aus der ganzen Welt. Ein Besuch der Internationalen Messe für weiße Trüffel in der Stadt Alba, nicht weit von Neive, ist ein weiteres Highlight für Liebhaber der weißen Trüffel. Also, jetzt reservieren 🙂

Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia – beautiful but for how long?

The Salar de Uyuni in the Andes in southwest Bolivia is the largest salt surface on earth (about 11’000 square kilometers). This place, at an altitude of about 3,700 meters, attracts tourists from all over the world. Most visitors are tourists from Japan and other Asian countries. There are daily flights from La Paz to Uyuni, a small town on the edge of this salt desert. Of course buses also run between Uyuni and for example La Paz, Potosi or Chile.

Several hotels were built in the area almost completely (walls, roofs, beds, tables) with salt blocks from the Salar. I stayed at the Hotel de Sal Luna Salada near Colchani. The price performance ratio of this hotel and spa is very good and the view over the salt desert is absolutely unique!

The Palacio de Sal was the first such hotel and was built in the middle of the salt desert, but had to be closed several years after its opening due to health and environmental problems. Today, most tours stop there for a lunch break and for shots of the former Palacio de Sal and its surroundings; the many national flags in front of the building are a popular photo motive. Actually, day trips to the salt desert in 4 × 4 jeeps are common and the cheapest way to visit the salt pans. The tours start in Uyuni around 10 am and end around 5 pm. I booked two day tours, one organized by my hotel and the other from a tour operator in Uyuni. The tours usually start with a visit to the Train Cemetery, followed by a short stop at Colchani, where a small salt factory is shown to tourists. From there you continue to the salt desert and there is enough time to photograph this fantastic and overwhelming salt surface and, during the rainy season, to admire the reflections of clouds and sky in the water. I am convinced that you will enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Salar de Uyuni to the fullest. It will remain an unforgettable experience!

However, for how long? Our tour guide, who earns as Guide extra Money for her studies in La Paza, was very worried about the future of the Salar de Uyuni. She led us to small holes in the otherwise mirror-smooth surface of the salt desert. This anomaly is attributed to the recent intensification of the extraction of lithium carbonate from the water under the salt crust. This rare and sought-after resource is used for the production of high-performance batteries and promises huge profits for the poor country Bolivia, given the looming shift to electric vehicles. The beauty of the Salar might however be at risk considering that about 60% of the world reserves of Lithium are in Bolivia, namely in the Salar de Uyuni.

Der Salar de Uyuni in den Anden im Südwesten Boliviens ist die größte Salzfläche der Erde (ca. 11’000 Quadratkilometer). Dieser Ort auf einer Höhe von etwa 3.700 Metern zieht Touristen aus der ganzen Welt an. Die meisten Besucher sind Touristen aus Japan und anderen asiatischen Ländern. Es gibt tägliche Flüge von La Paz nach Uyuni, einer kleinen Stadt am Rande dieser Salzwüste. Natürlich fahren auch Busse zwischen Uyuni und zum Beispiel La Paz, Potosi oder Chile.

Mehrere Hotels wurden in der Gegend fast vollständig (Wände, Dächer, Betten, Tische) mit Salzblöcken aus dem Salar gebaut. Ich war im Hotel de Sal Luna Salada in der Nähe von Colchani. Das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis dieses Hotels ist sehr gut und der Blick über die Salzwüst absolut einzigartig!

Der Palacio de Sal war das erste derartige Hotel und wurde in der Mitte der Salzwüste errichtet, musste jedoch einige Jahre nach seiner Eröffnung wegen Gesundheits- und Umweltproblemen geschlossen werden. Heute halten die meisten Touren dort für eine Mittagspause und für Photoaufnahmen des ehemaligen Palacio de Sal und seiner Umgebung; die vielen Nationalflaggen vor dem Gebäude sind ein beliebtes Fotomotiv. Eigentlich sind Tagesausflüge in die Salzwüste in 4 × 4 Jeeps üblich und die billigste Art, die Salinen zu besuchen. Die Touren beginnen in Uyuni gegen 10 Uhr und enden gegen 17 Uhr. Ich buchte zwei Tagestouren, eine organisiert von meinem Hotel und die andere von einem Reiseveranstalter in Uyuni. Die Touren beginnen normalerweise mit einem Besuch des Zugfriedhofs, gefolgt von einem kurzen Halt in Colchani, wo eine kleine Salzfabrik den Touristen gezeigt wird. Von dort geht es dann weiter in die Salzwüste und es bleibt genügend Zeit, um diese fantastische und überwältigende Salzoberfläche zu fotografieren und während der Regenzeit die Spiegelungen von Wolken und Himmel im Wasser zu bewundern. Ich bin überzeugt, dass Sie die Schönheit und Ruhe des Salar de Uyuni in vollen Zügen genießen werden. Es wird ein unvergessliches Erlebnis bleiben!

Für wie lange aber? Eine junge Reiseleiterin, die sich hier mit ihren Führungen durch die Salzwüste ein Zusatzbrot für ihr Studium in La Paz verdient, zeigte sich sehr besorgt über die Zukunft der Salar de Uyuni. Sie führte uns zu kleinen Einbrüchen in der ansonsten spiegelglatten Oberfläche der Salzwüste. Diese Anomalie wird zurückgeführt auf die kürzlich begonnene Intensivierung der Extraktion von Lithiumkarbonat aus dem sich unter der Salzkruste befindlichen Wassers. Dieser seltene und begehrte Rohstoff wird für die Herstellung von leistungsstarken Batterien verwendet und verspricht in Anbetracht der sich abzeichnenden Verlagerung auf Elektrofahrzeuge riesige Gewinne für das arme Land Bolivien. Die Schönheit des Salar könnte jedoch in Gefahr sein, wenn man bedenkt, dass etwa 60% der Weltreserven von Lithium in Bolivien liegen, nämlich in der Salar de Uyuni.

Beautiful Zug on Lake Zug – Switzerland

Today we had a nice and already summery weather on Lake Zug. I think the city Zug, with the most beautiful sunsets in Switzerland, is always worth a visit. The canton of Zug is known not only for its excellent Zuger Kirschorte, but also for its internationality and cultural diversity. Zug is also considered the tax haven of Switzerland with the lowest taxes in the country. This small and economically prosperous canton is home to people from over 125 countries. A trip on the mountain railway to Zugerberg or by boat on the Aegerisee or Lake Zug makes a visit to an unforgettable experience.

Heute hatten wir ein schönes und bereits sommerliches Wetter am Zugersee. Ich finde, die Stadt Zug, mit den schönsten Sonnenuntergängen in der Schweiz, ist immer einen Besuch wert. Der Kanton Zug ist nicht nur für seine vorzügliche Zuger Kirschorte bekannt, sondern auch für seine Internationalität und kulturelle Vielfalt. Zug gilt auch als Steuerparadies der Schweiz mit den niedrigsten Steuern im Land. In diesem kleinen und wirtschaftlich prosperierenden Kanton leben Menschen aus über 125 Ländern. Ein Ausflug mit der Bergbahn zum Zugerberg oder mit dem Schiff auf dem Aegerisee oder Zugersee macht einen Besuch zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis.

Museo Larco in Lima, Peru

The Museo Larco should definitely be on the “to do” list when visiting Lima. It is located about 20 minutes from the historic center of Lima in the Pueblo Libre district. The white building was built in the typical architecture of the 18th century of the town Trujillo. Originally founded in Trujillo, the museum was relocated to Lima some 50 years ago. The museum’s permanent exhibition offers visitors a superb perspective on more than 5,000 years of ancient Peruvian history. Also very interesting are the storage rooms with tens of thousands of antique ceramic objects that are made accessible to the public. A little further away from the main museum are exhibited erotic artworks that give visitors a picture of the Peruvian sexuality of that time. You will find the “erotic rooms”, a bit hidden, on the way to the restaurant. All in all, the Museo Larco is one of the best and most beautiful museums I have visited in South America. Das Museo Larco sollte auf jeden Fall auf der „to do“ Liste sein, wenn man Lima besucht. Es liegt etwa 20 Minuten vom historischen Zentrum von Lima im Stadtteil Pueblo Libre entfernt. Das weiße Gebäude wurde in der typischen Architektur der Stadt Trujillo aus dem 18. Jahrhundert erbaut. Ursprünglich gegründet in Trujillo wurde das Museum vor etwa 50 Jahren nach Lima verlegt. Die Dauerausstellung des Museums bietet den Besuchern eine hervorragende Perspektive auf mehr als 5000 Jahre antiker peruanischer Geschichte. Auch sehr interessant sind die Lagerräume mit Zehntausenden von antiken keramischen Gegenständen die der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemachte werden. Ein wenig abseits des Hauptmuseums werden erotische Kunstwerke ausgestellt die den Besuchern ein Bild der peruanische Sexualität jener Zeit vermittelt. Sie werden die „Erotik Zimmer“, ein wenig versteckt, auf dem Weg zum Restaurant finden. Alles in allem ist das Museo Larco eines der besten und schönsten Museen die ich in Südamerika besucht habe. The Chapel Bridge in Lucerne Switzerland

Built in 1365, the Chapel Bridge, the landmark and one of the many tourist attractions of the city of Lucerne in Switzerland, is the oldest and second longest covered wooden bridge in Europe. In the gable of the bridge are triangular paintings from the 17th century, which represent important scenes of Swiss history. Every day, thousands of tourists from all over the world cross this bridge, which was largely destroyed and immediately rebuilt after a fire in 1993. For me, a visit of the city Lucerne would be inconceivable without crossing this wooden bridge over the river Reuss which connects the old with the former Neustadt Lucerne.

Die 1365 erbaute Kapellbrücke, das Wahrzeichen und eine der vielen Touristenattraktionen der Stadt Luzern in der Schweiz, ist die älteste und zweitlängste überdachte Holzbrücke Europas. Im Giebel der Brücke sind dreieckige Gemälde aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, die wichtige Szenen der Schweizer Geschichte darstellen. Jeden Tag überqueren tausende Touristen aus aller Welt die Brücke, die nach einem Brand 1993 weitgehend zerstört und sofort wieder aufgebaut wurde. Für mich wäre ein Besuch der Stadt Luzern undenkbar, ohne diese Holzbrücke über die Reuss zu überqueren verbindet das Alte mit der ehemaligen Neustadt Luzern.

Canale Grande Venice – back in time

Driving with a „Vaporetto“ (Water Bus) through the Canale Grande, a main waterway in the lagoon city of Venice, is for me every time again a ride through the past. The most famous of the five bridges spanning the canal is the Rialto Bridge, built in the late 16th century; probably one of the most photographed landmarks in Italy. The Canale Grande, lined with over 200 splendid buildings and noble palaces, keeps my mind drifting back and forth, especially during the night, to the time of the Venetian merchant Marco Polo in the 14th century and the bustle of the merchants, sailors and bankers in one of the largest and most powerful trading cities and financial centers of Europe and the world at that time.

Die Fahrt mit einem „Vaporetto“ (Wasser Bus) durch den Canale Grande, eine Hauptwasserstrasse in der Lagunenstadt Venedig, ist für mich jedes Mal wieder eine Fahrt durch die Vergangenheit. Die bekannteste der fünf Brücken welche den Kanal überspannt ist die im späten 16. Jahrhundert gebaute Rialto Brücke; wahrscheinlich eines der am meisten fotografierten Wahrzeichen Italiens. Der mit über 200 prächtigen Prachtbauten und Adelspalästen gesäumte Canale Grande lässt meine Gedanken immer wieder, und besonders während der Nacht, zurück schweifen in die Zeit des venezianischen Händlers Marco Polo im 14. Jahrhundert und an das geschäftige Treiben der Kaufleute, Seefahrer und Banker in einer der grössten und mächtigsten Handelsstädte und Finanzzentren Europas und der damaligen Welt.

Craw steals Credit Card and wants to buy a Train ticket

The video of a Twitter user from Japan proves that crows are intelligent birds. On an ordinary day, at a train station in Tokyo, a travel-loving crow tried to buy a train ticket with a stolen credit card. It can be seen how the crow tries to understand the display of the ticket machine and observes how a traveler next to her paid the fare with a credit card. That should also work for me, the crow has certainly thought and schwups, she stole the perplexed neighbor her credit card. Unfortunately, the payment was not working, the PIN code was missing 🙂 Otherwise it would certainly have been the first time that a crow traveled by train in a highly official way 🙂 🙂

Das Video eines Twitter-Users aus Japan beweist das Krähen intelligente Vögel sind. An einem gewöhnlichen Tag in einer Bahnstation in Tokyo versuchte eine reisefreudige Krähe mit einer gestohlenen Kreditkarte ein Bahnticket zu kaufen. Es ist zu sehen wie die Krähe versucht den Display des Ticketautomaten zu verstehen und beobachtet wie eine Reisende am Automaten nebenan den Fahrpreis mit der Kreditkarte bezahlt. Das sollte doch auch bei mir gehen hat sich die Krähe sicherlich gedacht und schwups stahl der verdutzten Nachbarin ihre Kreditkarte. Leider hat die Bezahlung nicht funktioniert, es fehlte der PIN-Code 🙂 Es wäre sonst sicherlich das erste Mal gewesen, dass eine Krähe mit einem Zug hochoffiziell auf Reisen gegangen wäre 🙂 🙂

The famous „El Bar de Elvis“ in Reliegos, Spain, on the way to Santiago de Compostela

If you ever walk the Camino de Santiago, you should not miss a bar! This bar is definitely the strangest bar I’ve seen on the Camino. It reminds me of a movie, but I do not remember which one it was? The graffiti-covered Bar de Elvis in Reliegos comes after a long sweaty hike on the Meseta. I had a great time in this bar, crazy rock music and oldies, good food, fab tapas, the best “boccadillos”, excellent wine and of course a wonderful company. The Elvis Bar, the meeting place for tired pilgrims 🙂

Wenn Sie den Camino de Santiago gehen, sollten Sie auf keinen Fall eine Bar verpassen! Diese Bar ist definitiv die seltsamste Bar, die ich auf dem Camino gesehen habe. Es erinnert mich an einen Film, aber ich erinnere mich nicht mehr welcher das war? Die mit Graffiti bedeckte Bar de Elvis in Reliegos kommt nach einer langen schweisstreibenden Wanderung über die Meseta. Ich hatte eine tolle Zeit dort, fetzige Rockmusik und Oldies, gutes Essen, fabelhafte Tapas, die besten „Boccadillos“, ausgezeichneter Wein und natürlich eine wunderbare Gesellschaft. Die Elvis Bar, der Treffpunkt für müde Pilger 🙂

Renovation of famous Hotel destroyed by hurrican Irma

The very exclusive Hotel Cheval Blanc St. Barth Isle de France on Flamands Bay has been severely damaged by the hurrican Irma. Renovation and construction work are currently ongoing. Like the famous Hotel Eden Rock, that suffers of the same destiny, reopening may be expected, according to the press, late 2018.

Das sehr exklusive Hotel Cheval Blanc St. Barth Isle de France an der Flamandsbucht wurde durch den Hurrikan Irma schwer beschädigt. Renovierungs- und Bauarbeiten werden derzeit durchgeführt. Wie das berühmte Hotel Eden Rock, das das gleiche Schicksal erlitten hat, wird gemäss Presseberichten die Wiedereröffnung per Ende 2018 erwartet.

The Uros on lake Titikaka

The Uros are an ethnic group of Indians on the Lake Titikaka (3840 meters above sea level) near Puno in Peru, there are still a couple of thousand people of this ethnic group living today in said area. The original language of the Uros is Urukilla. In the colonial era, they converted to Aymara, which is spoken here to the present day. The Uros live for many hundreds of years on approximately 50 “floating islands”, which are constructed from dried Totora reeds. The same plant is also the raw material for reed boats and their houses on the islands.

The Uros mainly live from fishing, bird hunting and collecting bird eggs. Today, of course, the income of day tourists are of central importance. This has brought the archipelago some modern conveniences, including solar panels, television, radio and mobile phones.

The islands, now populated by a few hundred Uros, are located 6 km east of the port of Puno. The majority of Uros now lives and works on the mainland and students are learning at the the university in Puno.

The day trips depart from the port of Puno and the crossing to the floating Uros Islands takes about 30 minutes. You will travel by boat through a natural “channel” cut out of a dense reef field to one of these islands, where you will meet the resident families, explore their surroundings and get to know their way of life; of course you can take a lot of photos! The women of the visited islands weave, sew and carve small souvenirs which you can buy for little money. You also have the option to visit a neighboring island with a reed boat (the transfer will be paid directly to the family that owns the boat).

Die Uros auf dem Titikaka See

Die Uros sind eine ethnische Gruppe von Indianern am Titikaka-See (3840 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel) in der Nähe von Puno in Peru; es leben immer noch ein paar tausend Menschen dieser ethnischen Gruppe in diesem Gebiet. Die ursprüngliche Sprache der Uros ist Urukilla. In der Kolonialzeit wechselten sie mit der Zeit zu Aymara das hier bis heute gesprochen wird. Die Uros leben seit vielen hundert Jahren auf diesen „schwimmenden Inseln”, die aus getrockneten Totora-Schilfen bestehen. Die Uros leben hauptsächlich vom Fischfang, der Vogeljagd und dem Sammeln von Vogeleiern. Heute ist natürlich das Einkommen der Tagestouristen von zentraler Bedeutung. Dies hat dem Archipel moderne Annehmlichkeiten gebracht wie Sonnenkollektoren, Fernsehen und Radio, etc.

Die Inseln, die heute von einigen hundert Uros bevölkert sind, liegen 6 km östlich des Hafens von Puno. Die Mehrheit der Uros lebt und arbeitet auf dem Festland und die Studenten lernen an der Universität in Puno.

Die Tagesausflüge beginnen am Hafen von Puno und die Überfahrt zu den schwimmenden Uros-Inseln dauert etwa 30 Minuten. Sie werden mit dem Boot durch einen natürlichen “Kanal” fahren, der aus einem dichten Schilffeld herausgeschnitten wurde um zu einer dieser Inseln zu gelangen, wo Sie die ansässigen Familien treffen, ihre Umgebung erkunden und ihre Lebensweise kennenlernen werden; natürlich können Sie viele Fotos machen! Die Frauen der besuchten Inseln weben, nähen und schnitzen kleine Souvenirs, die man für wenig Geld kaufen kann. Sie haben auch die Möglichkeit, eine Nachbarinsel mit einem Schilfboot zu besuchen (der Transfer wird direkt an die Familie gezahlt, die das Boot besitzt).

Die beste Art, die Uros zu besuchen ist mindestens einen Tag vorher in Puno anzukommen und dort zu übernachten. Hotels können direkt über diesen LINK gebucht werden.

Princess Juliana Airport Sint Maarten, a temporary solution due to Hurrican Irma

The Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM) on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten is known as one of the most dangerous airports in the world. Perhaps even better known are the pictures of the starts. The engines howl loudly, the enormous thrust swirls sand and blows foolhardy tourists across the beach directly into the sea.

The relatively new and modern arrival & departures hall was severely damaged by the hurricane IRMA. As a result, the airport reduced the capacity of the flights and a provisional tent replaces the damaged airport hall. Despite the many imponderables, the responsible and staff of the airport are doing a great job coping with the current situation. The arrival and handling of passengers is highly professional and smooth. However, I am already looking forward to the completion of the “new” old airport next year?

Der Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM) auf der Karibikinsel Sint  Maarten gilt als einer der gefährlichsten Flughäfen der Welt. Vielleicht noch bekannter sind die Bilder von den Starts. Die Motoren heulen laut auf, der enorme Schub wirbelt Sand und weht waghalsige Touristen über den Strand direkt ins Meer.

Die relativ neue und moderne Ankunfts- und Abflughalle wurde durch den Hurrikan IRMA schwer beschädigt. Infolgedessen reduzierte der Flughafen die Kapazität der Flüge und ein provisorisches Zelt ersetzt die beschädigte Flughafenhalle. Trotz der vielen Unwägbarkeiten leisten die Verantwortlichen und Mitarbeiter des Flughafens einen guten Job um die aktuelle Situation zu bewältigen. Das Handling der Flugpassagiere ist sehr professionell und effizient. Ich freue mich jedoch schon jetzt auf die Fertigstellung des “neuen” alten Flughafens im nächsten Jahr?

Crime in Philipsburg on the island of Sint Maarten

My wife and I booked a room in a „4-star hotel“ for one night in Philipsburg, the capital of Sint Maarten. On our trip back home from St. Barth we decided to make a stopover on this island. Friends warned us of the high crime rate in Philipsburg and we were advised to be extremely careful, especially during the night. At check-in, the hotel management recommended us each time before leaving our room and during the night to lower the shutters in front of the closed room windows and to block the door with the door-stopper as an additional security measure.

As a consequence of this uncomfortable situation, we were extra careful than usual on our shopping tour in the city. In the evening we restricted our walking radius around the hotel to 50 meters. 

However, on the way back from the Dinner, only a few meters from our hotel, we were approached by an aggressive highwayman, that harassed and pursued us with wild insults. We managed to escape the pursuer and rescued us back to the hotel where we spent the night behind locked doors, windows and closed shutters. The street noise, booming music from the beach, noisy hotel guests and an unbearable hum of the minibar gave us the rest.

My Conclusion: Increased caution is required in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten! If possible, refraining from an overnight stay in this town due to security concerns may be considered.

Kriminalität in Philipsburg auf der Insel Sint Maarten

Meine Frau und ich hatten ein Zimmer in einem “4-Sterne-Hotel” für eine Nacht in Philipsburg, der Hauptstadt von Sint Maarten gebucht. Auf unserer Heimreise von St. Barth haben wir uns entschlossen, einen Zwischenstopp auf dieser Insel einzulegen. Freunde warnten uns vor der hohen Kriminalitätsrate in Philipsburg und es wurde uns geratenen besonders in der Nacht sehr vorsichtig zu sein. Beim Check-In empfahl uns die Hotelleitung vor jedem Verlassen unseres Zimmers und während der Nacht die Rollläden vor den verschlossenen Fenstern als zusätzliche Sicherheit abzusenken und die Tür mit dem Türstopper ebenfalls zu blockieren.

Als Folge dieser unangenehmen Situation waren wir auf unserer Shopping-Tour in der Stadt besonders vorsichtig und am Abend begrenzten wir den Ausgangs-Radius um das Hotel auf 50 Meter. 

Das hat uns alles nichts genutzt, auf dem Rückweg vom Abendessen wurden wir von einem aggressiven Wegelagerer angegangen, bedrängt und mit wüsten Beschimpfungen verfolgt. Es ist uns gelungen den Verfolger abzuhängen und uns zurück ins Hotel zu retten. Die Nacht verbrachten wir hinter verriegelten Türen, Fenstern und heruntergelassenen Rollläden. Der Strassenlärm, dröhnende Musik vom Strand, laute Hotelgäste und das unerträglichen Brummen der Minibar hat uns den Rest gegeben.

Mein Fazit: Erhöhte Vorsicht ist erforderlich in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten! Wenn möglich empfehle ich aus Sicherheitsgründen eine Übernachtung in dieser Stadt zu überdenken.

Heavy traffic & construction work are disturbing St. Barth‘s peacefulness

St.Barth the „Island of excellence“, some call it the Island of billionaires has in my opinion reached it’s limits this year. St. Barth became famous when in the 1950‘s the Rockefellers from New York purchased land to build their „summer“ residence on this beautiful island. For many years, the Eco-Tourisme built the fundament of the island’s economy, now its construction of villas, hotels and infrastructure. 

An Island where the beautiful and the rich meet suffers today from heavy road traffic and noise caused by the many construction sites. Having said that, the immense damages that the hurricane IRMA caused may be the reason for the current „busy and noisy“ situation. I am convinced, that there are currently more construction trucks than billionaires and more cars and motor rollers than inhabitants altogether on this fantastic Caribbean island.

Let’s hope St. Barth finds its balance soon again and let’s hope it will escape natural disasters like the hurricane IRMA in the future.

Starker Verkehr und Baustellen stören St. Barth‘s Ruhe

St.Barth, die “Insel der Exzellenz”, manche nennen es die Insel der Milliardäre, hat meines Erachtens in diesem Jahr seine Grenzen erreicht. Berühmt wurde St. Barth, als die Rockefellers aus New York in den 1950er Jahren Land kauften, um ihre “Sommerresidenz” auf dieser wunderschönen Insel zu bauen. Viele Jahre lang war der Eco-Tourismus das Fundament der Wirtschaft dieser Insel, heute ist es die Bauwirtschaft.

Eine Insel, wo sich die Schönen und die Reichen treffen, leidet heute unter starkem Straßenverkehr und Lärm durch die vielen Baustellen von Villen, Hotels und Infrastruktur. Allerdings könnten die immensen Schäden, die der Hurrikan IRMA verursacht hat, der Grund für die derzeitige “geschäftige und laute” Situation sein. Ich bin der der Meinung, dass es auf dieser fantastischen karibischen Insel derzeit mehr Baufahrzeuge als Milliardäre und mehr Autos und Motorroller als Einwohner gibt.

Hoffen wir, dass St. Barth bald wieder die Balance findet und hoffen wir, dass dieses „Paradies“ in Zukunft Naturkatastrophen wie dem Hurrikan IRMA entkommen kann.

Dangerous Airport St. Barth – Flight or Ferry

Der Flughafen auf St. Barth gilt als einer der gefährlichsten der Welt und kann nur mit einer Spezial-Lizenz angeflogen werden. Die sehr kurze Landebahn muss von den Piloten im Sturzflug angeflogen und nach dem „Touchdown“ der Maschine scharf abgebremst werden. Ein Anflug aus der Gegenrichtung über die Meeresbucht von St. Jean erfordert ebenfalls höchste Konzentration der Piloten.

Für Besucher der Insel St. Barth über Saint Martin (Sint Maarten) kann alternativ die Fähre ab Flughafen Princess Juliana, Oysterpond oder Marigot benutzt werden; aber Achtung, die Überfahrt zwischen den beiden Inseln kann bei hohem Seegang ganz schön deftig werden.

Iguana delicatissima

Today, we received a visit of a Lesser Antillean Iguana (Iguana delicatissima) that is endangered by our civilization and by the agressive “green” Iguana (Iguana iguana) which arrived on the caribbean islands through the animal trade. From the 17 islands of the West Indies, only 7 are hosting a viable population of the “native” and rare species Iguana delicatissima.

Heute hat uns ein kleiner Antillen-Leguan (Iguana delicatissima) besucht. Dieses Reptil wird von unserer Zivilisation und dem aggressiven “grünen” Leguan (Iguana Iguana) welcher durch den Tierhandel auf die karibischen Inseln gekommen ist, stark bedroht. Von den 17 Westindischen Inseln beherbergen nur noch gerade 7 eine lebensfähige Population dieser seltenen „einheimischen“ Spezies Iguana delicatissima.
