Craw steals Credit Card and wants to buy a Train ticket

The video of a Twitter user from Japan proves that crows are intelligent birds. On an ordinary day, at a train station in Tokyo, a travel-loving crow tried to buy a train ticket with a stolen credit card. It can be seen how the crow tries to understand the display of the ticket machine and observes how a traveler next to her paid the fare with a credit card. That should also work for me, the crow has certainly thought and schwups, she stole the perplexed neighbor her credit card. Unfortunately, the payment was not working, the PIN code was missing 🙂 Otherwise it would certainly have been the first time that a crow traveled by train in a highly official way 🙂 🙂

Das Video eines Twitter-Users aus Japan beweist das Krähen intelligente Vögel sind. An einem gewöhnlichen Tag in einer Bahnstation in Tokyo versuchte eine reisefreudige Krähe mit einer gestohlenen Kreditkarte ein Bahnticket zu kaufen. Es ist zu sehen wie die Krähe versucht den Display des Ticketautomaten zu verstehen und beobachtet wie eine Reisende am Automaten nebenan den Fahrpreis mit der Kreditkarte bezahlt. Das sollte doch auch bei mir gehen hat sich die Krähe sicherlich gedacht und schwups stahl der verdutzten Nachbarin ihre Kreditkarte. Leider hat die Bezahlung nicht funktioniert, es fehlte der PIN-Code 🙂 Es wäre sonst sicherlich das erste Mal gewesen, dass eine Krähe mit einem Zug hochoffiziell auf Reisen gegangen wäre 🙂 🙂

Johannes Brahms, his time in Baden-Baden, Germany

Did you know that the ingenious German composer Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) composed or completed many of his famous works in a mansard apartment in Baden-Baden-Lichtenfeld during the summer months of 1865-1874? This lavish spa resort, not far from his apartment, was also home to his lifelong friend, composer and pianist Clara Schuhmann. The shingled house from the 19th century remained unchanged until today; and the living quarters of Johannes Brahms are nowadays a museum.

Wussten Sie, dass der geniale deutsche composer Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) während den Sommermonaten der Jahre 1865 bis 1874 in einer Mansarden Wohnung in Baden-Baden-Lichtenfeld viele seiner berühmten Werke komponierte oder vollendete. In diesem eleganten Kurort, nur unweit von seiner Wohnung entfernt, wohnte zu dieser Zeit ebenfalls seine lebenslange Freundin, die Komponistin und Pianistin Clara Schuhmann. Art & Travel: Irene Mueller (ArtspaceIrene) is convinced „trees never die“

Saint Barthélemy (or St. Barth, St. Barths, St-Barts) is a small Caribbean island in the French West Indies (FWI) with an area of approximately 25 square kilometers and about 9000 inhabitants. The capital, with its beautiful natural harbor, is Gustavia. Before the end of the Napoleonic wars, St. Barth was for a short time a Swedish colony, but later fell back to France. The language, cuisine and culture are clearly French, i.e. you will not miss the typical French croissant in St. Barth. The island is a very popular tourist destination; and especially in the wintertime the beautiful and the rich are bustling there.

The Saline – Before the time of tourism, the few islanders lived on fishing, breeding livestock, growing cotton and extracting salt. On the road to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island (saline) is an old salt marsh that was exploited until the 1970s. Today, this saline is a unique ecosystem and considered a sanctuary and breeding ground for rare freshwater and seawater birds. But in the salt marsh are still quite different beauties, there are from the salt over the decades gnawed and preserved tree trunks, trees that once here, in this place, the tired and thirsty salt pickers their shadow ghost donated.

The artist Irene Mueller (ArtspaceIrene) was inspired by these “trees” and has expressed it in her Artist Statement as follows:

“As an artist, I’m interested in mother nature and the relationship between people and the universe. I try to understand and express the visible and the invisible in my work. Constant change is the law of nature. I think it is necessary to look deeper into nature so that we can avoid the sadness that might come first. To further understand that life finds new ways and forms to exist and to find the beauty and the richness in this transformation process.

Between 2013 and 2017, I painted a series of pictures on my current topic “Trees never die”. The subjects are trees, which were destroyed from the salt of a saline in pc. Barth. When I saw these trees, they appeared dead, undressed, helpless to move, but they immediately touched me with their elegance, grace and sophistication. I felt their desire to live, so I revived them in a different form, in the world of surreality, to be different, to be immortal. ”

The new life of the „trees“ – These trees, or their pictures, shown in their full splendor on various exhibitions, including the Grand Palais in Paris, at the Biennale in Florence, the Triennale in Rome or the Arte Salerno; Some found their way into private collections, others are still waiting for a new home.

Die Hauptstadt, mit ihrem wunderschönen natürlichen Hafen, ist Gustavia. Vor dem Ende der Napoleonischen Kriege war St. Barth für eine kurze Zeit eine schwedische Kolonie, fiel später aber wieder zurück an Frankreich. Die Sprache, Küche und Kultur sind eindeutig Französisch, d.h. Du wirst in St. Barth den typischen französischen Croissant nicht vermissen. Die Insel ist ein sehr beliebtes Touristenziel; und vor allem in der Winterzeit tummeln sich dort die Schönen und Reichen.

Die Saline – Vor der Zeit des Tourismus lebten die wenigen Insel-Bewohner vom Fischfang, der Aufzucht von Nutztieren, dem Anbau von Baumwolle und der Gewinnung von Salz. Auf der Strasse zu einem der schönsten Strände der Insel (Saline) liegt eine alte Salzmarsch die bis in 1970er Jahre ausgebeutet wurde. Heute ist diese Saline ein einzigartiges Ökosystem und gilt als Zufluchtsort und Brutstätte für seltene Süsswasser und Seewasservögel. Aber in der Salzmarsch befinden sich noch ganz andere Schönheiten, es sind vom Salz über die Jahrzehnte zermürbten und konservierten Baumstämme, Bäume die einst hier, an diesem Ort, den müden und durstigen Salzpflückern ihren Schatten Gespenst gespendet haben.

Die Kunstmalerin Irene Mueller (ArtspaceIrene) hat sich von diesen „Bäumen“ inspirieren lassen und drückt es in ihrem Artiststatement wie folgt aus:

„Als Künstlerin interessiert mich die Mutter Natur und die Beziehung zwischen Menschen und dem Universum. Ich versuche das Sichtbare und Unsichtbare in meinen Arbeiten zu verstehen und auszudrücken. Stetige Veränderung ist das Gesetz der Natur. Ich glaube, es ist notwendig, die Natur tiefer zu sehen, damit wir die Traurigkeit vermeiden können, die einem zuerst begegnen könnte. Weiter zu verstehen, dass das Leben neue Wege und Formen findet, um zu existieren und die Schönheit und den Reichtum in diesem Transformationsprozess zu finden.

Ich malte zwischen 2013 und 2017 eine Serie von Bildern zu meinem dann aktuellen Thema “Bäume sterben nie”. Die Sujets sind Bäume, die aus dem Salz einer Saline in St. Barth zerstört wurden. Als ich diese Bäume sah, erschienen sie wie tot, entkleidet, hilflos sich zu bewegen, aber sie berührten mich sofort mit ihrer Eleganz, Grazie und Raffinesse. Ich spürte ihren Wunsch zu leben, also belebte ich sie in einer anderen Form, in der Welt der Surrealität, um anders zu sein, um unsterblich zu sein.“

Das neue Leben der Bäume – Diese Bäume, respektive deren Bilder, erstrahlten in ihrer vollen Pracht an verschiedensten Ausstellungen, unter anderem im Grand Palais Paris, an der Biennale in Florenz, der Triennale in Rom oder der Arte Salerno; einige fanden ihren Weg in Privatsammlungen, andere warten noch auf ein neues Zuhause.

The famous „El Bar de Elvis“ in Reliegos, Spain, on the way to Santiago de Compostela

If you ever walk the Camino de Santiago, you should not miss a bar! This bar is definitely the strangest bar I’ve seen on the Camino. It reminds me of a movie, but I do not remember which one it was? The graffiti-covered Bar de Elvis in Reliegos comes after a long sweaty hike on the Meseta. I had a great time in this bar, crazy rock music and oldies, good food, fab tapas, the best “boccadillos”, excellent wine and of course a wonderful company. The Elvis Bar, the meeting place for tired pilgrims 🙂

Wenn Sie den Camino de Santiago gehen, sollten Sie auf keinen Fall eine Bar verpassen! Diese Bar ist definitiv die seltsamste Bar, die ich auf dem Camino gesehen habe. Es erinnert mich an einen Film, aber ich erinnere mich nicht mehr welcher das war? Die mit Graffiti bedeckte Bar de Elvis in Reliegos kommt nach einer langen schweisstreibenden Wanderung über die Meseta. Ich hatte eine tolle Zeit dort, fetzige Rockmusik und Oldies, gutes Essen, fabelhafte Tapas, die besten „Boccadillos“, ausgezeichneter Wein und natürlich eine wunderbare Gesellschaft. Die Elvis Bar, der Treffpunkt für müde Pilger 🙂

The Rhine Fall in Switzerland

The Rhine Fall in Switzerland is one of the three largest waterfalls in Europe. It has a height of 23 meters and a width of 150 meters. With a normal water supply, about 400 cubic meters of water per second fall over the rocks.

On both sides of the Rhine you can reach viewing platforms with a spectacular view of the Rhine Fall. At the Rhine Fall‘s basin in Neuhausen (canton Schaffhausen) lies the castle Wörth. From there you can reach the middle rock of the Rhine Fall with a small boat and marvel at the falling mass of water after ascending the viewing platform on this rock via small steps. On the Zurich side you can reach the viewing platforms over the castle Laufen. There is ample parking for the visitors and the visit is chargeable.

Der Rheinfall in der Schweiz ist einer der drei größten Wasserfälle Europas. Er hat eine Höhe von 23 Metern und eine Breite von 150 Metern. Bei einer normalen Wasserversorgung fallen etwa 400 Kubikmeter Wasser pro Sekunde über die Felsen.

Auf beiden Seiten des Rheins erreichen Sie Aussichtsplattformen mit einem spektakulären Blick auf den Rheinfall. Am Rheinfallbecken in Neuhausen (Kanton Schaffhausen) liegt das Schloss Wörth. Von dort aus kann man mit kleinen Booten den mittleren Felsen des Rheinfalls erreichen und, nach dem Aufstieg über kleine Stufen, die fallenden Wassermassen bestaunen. Auf der Zürcher Seite gelangt man zu den Aussichtsplattformen über die Burg Laufen. Es gibt genügend Parkplätze für die Besucher und der Besuch ist kostenpflichtig.

Travel Secrets Tourists don‘t know about

Die Strände von Anguilla mit ihrem weißen Sand und türkisen Wasser sind meiner Meinung nach die schönsten Strände der Karibik. Insbesondere liebe ich die weltberühmte Meads Bay Beach in Anguilla.

Renovation of famous Hotel destroyed by hurrican Irma

The very exclusive Hotel Cheval Blanc St. Barth Isle de France on Flamands Bay has been severely damaged by the hurrican Irma. Renovation and construction work are currently ongoing. Like the famous Hotel Eden Rock, that suffers of the same destiny, reopening may be expected, according to the press, late 2018.

Das sehr exklusive Hotel Cheval Blanc St. Barth Isle de France an der Flamandsbucht wurde durch den Hurrikan Irma schwer beschädigt. Renovierungs- und Bauarbeiten werden derzeit durchgeführt. Wie das berühmte Hotel Eden Rock, das das gleiche Schicksal erlitten hat, wird gemäss Presseberichten die Wiedereröffnung per Ende 2018 erwartet.

The Uros on lake Titikaka

The Uros are an ethnic group of Indians on the Lake Titikaka (3840 meters above sea level) near Puno in Peru, there are still a couple of thousand people of this ethnic group living today in said area. The original language of the Uros is Urukilla. In the colonial era, they converted to Aymara, which is spoken here to the present day. The Uros live for many hundreds of years on approximately 50 “floating islands”, which are constructed from dried Totora reeds. The same plant is also the raw material for reed boats and their houses on the islands.

The Uros mainly live from fishing, bird hunting and collecting bird eggs. Today, of course, the income of day tourists are of central importance. This has brought the archipelago some modern conveniences, including solar panels, television, radio and mobile phones.

The islands, now populated by a few hundred Uros, are located 6 km east of the port of Puno. The majority of Uros now lives and works on the mainland and students are learning at the the university in Puno.

The day trips depart from the port of Puno and the crossing to the floating Uros Islands takes about 30 minutes. You will travel by boat through a natural “channel” cut out of a dense reef field to one of these islands, where you will meet the resident families, explore their surroundings and get to know their way of life; of course you can take a lot of photos! The women of the visited islands weave, sew and carve small souvenirs which you can buy for little money. You also have the option to visit a neighboring island with a reed boat (the transfer will be paid directly to the family that owns the boat).

The best way to visit the Uros is to arrive in Puno at least one day before and stay overnight. Hotels can be booked directly via this LINK.

Die Uros sind eine ethnische Gruppe von Indianern am Titikaka-See (3840 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel) in der Nähe von Puno in Peru; es leben immer noch ein paar tausend Menschen dieser ethnischen Gruppe in diesem Gebiet. Die ursprüngliche Sprache der Uros ist Urukilla. In der Kolonialzeit wechselten sie mit der Zeit zu Aymara das hier bis heute gesprochen wird. Die Uros leben seit vielen hundert Jahren auf diesen „schwimmenden Inseln”, die aus getrockneten Totora-Schilfen bestehen. Die Uros leben hauptsächlich vom Fischfang, der Vogeljagd und dem Sammeln von Vogeleiern. Heute ist natürlich das Einkommen der Tagestouristen von zentraler Bedeutung. Dies hat dem Archipel moderne Annehmlichkeiten gebracht wie Sonnenkollektoren, Fernsehen und Radio, etc.

Die Inseln, die heute von einigen hundert Uros bevölkert sind, liegen 6 km östlich des Hafens von Puno. Die Mehrheit der Uros lebt und arbeitet auf dem Festland und die Studenten lernen an der Universität in Puno.

Die Tagesausflüge beginnen am Hafen von Puno und die Überfahrt zu den schwimmenden Uros-Inseln dauert etwa 30 Minuten. Sie werden mit dem Boot durch einen natürlichen “Kanal” fahren, der aus einem dichten Schilffeld herausgeschnitten wurde um zu einer dieser Inseln zu gelangen, wo Sie die ansässigen Familien treffen, ihre Umgebung erkunden und ihre Lebensweise kennenlernen werden; natürlich können Sie viele Fotos machen! Die Frauen der besuchten Inseln weben, nähen und schnitzen kleine Souvenirs, die man für wenig Geld kaufen kann. Sie haben auch die Möglichkeit, eine Nachbarinsel mit einem Schilfboot zu besuchen (der Transfer wird direkt an die Familie gezahlt, die das Boot besitzt).

Die beste Art, die Uros zu besuchen ist mindestens einen Tag vorher in Puno anzukommen und dort zu übernachten. Hotels können direkt über diesen LINK gebucht werden.

Princess Juliana Airport Sint Maarten, a temporary solution due to Hurrican Irma

The Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM) on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten is known as one of the most dangerous airports in the world. Perhaps even better known are the pictures of the starts. The engines howl loudly, the enormous thrust swirls sand and blows foolhardy tourists across the beach directly into the sea.

The relatively new and modern arrival & departures hall was severely damaged by the hurricane IRMA. As a result, the airport reduced the capacity of the flights and a provisional tent replaces the damaged airport hall. Despite the many imponderables, the responsible and staff of the airport are doing a great job coping with the current situation. The arrival and handling of passengers is highly professional and smooth. However, I am already looking forward to the completion of the “new” old airport next year?

Der Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM) auf der Karibikinsel Sint Maarten gilt als einer der gefährlichsten Flughäfen der Welt. Vielleicht noch bekannter sind die Bilder von den Starts. Die Motoren heulen laut auf, der enorme Schub wirbelt Sand und weht waghalsige Touristen über den Strand direkt ins Meer.

Die relativ neue und moderne Ankunfts- und Abflughalle wurde durch den Hurrikan IRMA schwer beschädigt. Infolgedessen reduzierte der Flughafen die Kapazität der Flüge und ein provisorisches Zelt ersetzt die beschädigte Flughafenhalle. Trotz der vielen Unwägbarkeiten leisten die Verantwortlichen und Mitarbeiter des Flughafens einen guten Job um die aktuelle Situation zu bewältigen. Das Handling der Flugpassagiere ist sehr professionell und effizient. Ich freue mich jedoch schon jetzt auf die Fertigstellung des “neuen” alten Flughafens im nächsten Jahr?

Crime in Philipsburg on the island of Sint Maarten

My wife and I booked a room in a „4-star hotel“ for one night in Philipsburg, the capital of Sint Maarten. On our trip back home from St. Barth we decided to make a stopover on this island. Friends warned us of the high crime rate in Philipsburg and we were advised to be extremely careful, especially during the night. At check-in, the hotel management recommended us each time before leaving our room and during the night to lower the shutters in front of the closed room windows and to block the door with the door-stopper as an additional security measure.

As a consequence of this uncomfortable situation, we were extra careful than usual on our shopping tour in the city. In the evening we restricted our walking radius around the hotel to 50 meters.

However, on the way back from the Dinner, only a few meters from our hotel, we were approached by an aggressive highwayman, that harassed and pursued us with wild insults. We managed to escape the pursuer and rescued us back to the hotel where we spent the night behind locked doors, windows and closed shutters. The street noise, booming music from the beach, noisy hotel guests and an unbearable hum of the minibar gave us the rest.

My Conclusion: Increased caution is required in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten! If possible, refraining from an overnight stay in this town due to security concerns may be considered.

Kriminalität in Philipsburg auf der Insel Sint Maarten

Meine Frau und ich hatten ein Zimmer in einem “4-Sterne-Hotel” für eine Nacht in Philipsburg, der Hauptstadt von Sint Maarten gebucht. Auf unserer Heimreise von St. Barth haben wir uns entschlossen, einen Zwischenstopp auf dieser Insel einzulegen. Freunde warnten uns vor der hohen Kriminalitätsrate in Philipsburg und es wurde uns geratenen besonders in der Nacht sehr vorsichtig zu sein. Beim Check-In empfahl uns die Hotelleitung vor jedem Verlassen unseres Zimmers und während der Nacht die Rollläden vor den verschlossenen Fenstern als zusätzliche Sicherheit abzusenken und die Tür mit dem Türstopper ebenfalls zu blockieren.

Als Folge dieser unangenehmen Situation waren wir auf unserer Shopping-Tour in der Stadt besonders vorsichtig und am Abend begrenzten wir den Ausgangs-Radius um das Hotel auf 50 Meter.

Das hat uns alles nichts genutzt, auf dem Rückweg vom Abendessen wurden wir von einem aggressiven Wegelagerer angegangen, bedrängt und mit wüsten Beschimpfungen verfolgt. Es ist uns gelungen den Verfolger abzuhängen und uns zurück ins Hotel zu retten. Die Nacht verbrachten wir hinter verriegelten Türen, Fenstern und heruntergelassenen Rollläden. Der Strassenlärm, dröhnende Musik vom Strand, laute Hotelgäste und das unerträglichen Brummen der Minibar hat uns den Rest gegeben.

Mein Fazit: Erhöhte Vorsicht ist erforderlich in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten! Wenn möglich empfehle ich aus Sicherheitsgründen eine Übernachtung in dieser Stadt zu überdenken.

Heavy traffic & construction work are disturbing St. Barth‘s peacefulness

St.Barth the „Island of excellence“, some call it the Island of billionaires has in my opinion reached it’s limits this year. St. Barth became famous when in the 1950‘s the Rockefellers from New York purchased land to build their „summer“ residence on this beautiful island. For many years, the Eco-Tourisme built the fundament of the island’s economy, now its construction of villas, hotels and infrastructure.

An Island where the beautiful and the rich meet suffers today from heavy road traffic and noise caused by the many construction sites. Having said that, the immense damages that the hurricane IRMA caused may be the reason for the current „busy and noisy“ situation. I am convinced, that there are currently more construction trucks than billionaires and more cars and motor rollers than inhabitants altogether on this fantastic Caribbean island.

Let’s hope St. Barth finds its balance soon again and let’s hope it will escape natural disasters like the hurricane IRMA in the future.

Starker Verkehr und Baustellen stören St. Barth‘s Ruhe

St.Barth, die “Insel der Exzellenz”, manche nennen es die Insel der Milliardäre, hat meines Erachtens in diesem Jahr seine Grenzen erreicht. Berühmt wurde St. Barth, als die Rockefellers aus New York in den 1950er Jahren Land kauften, um ihre “Sommerresidenz” auf dieser wunderschönen Insel zu bauen. Viele Jahre lang war der Eco-Tourismus das Fundament der Wirtschaft dieser Insel, heute ist es die Bauwirtschaft.

Eine Insel, wo sich die Schönen und die Reichen treffen, leidet heute unter starkem Straßenverkehr und Lärm durch die vielen Baustellen von Villen, Hotels und Infrastruktur. Allerdings könnten die immensen Schäden, die der Hurrikan IRMA verursacht hat, der Grund für die derzeitige “geschäftige und laute” Situation sein. Ich bin der der Meinung, dass es auf dieser fantastischen karibischen Insel derzeit mehr Baufahrzeuge als Milliardäre und mehr Autos und Motorroller als Einwohner gibt.

Hoffen wir, dass St. Barth bald wieder die Balance findet und hoffen wir, dass dieses „Paradies“ in Zukunft Naturkatastrophen wie dem Hurrikan IRMA entkommen kann.

Dangerous Airport St. Barth – Flight or Ferry

Der Flughafen auf St. Barth gilt als einer der gefährlichsten der Welt und kann nur mit einer Spezial-Lizenz angeflogen werden. Die sehr kurze Landebahn muss von den Piloten im Sturzflug angeflogen und nach dem „Touchdown“ der Maschine scharf abgebremst werden. Ein Anflug aus der Gegenrichtung über die Meeresbucht von St. Jean erfordert ebenfalls höchste Konzentration der Piloten.

Für Besucher der Insel St. Barth über Saint Martin (Sint Maarten) kann alternativ die Fähre ab Flughafen Princess Juliana, Oysterpond oder Marigot benutzt werden; aber Achtung, die Überfahrt zwischen den beiden Inseln kann bei hohem Seegang ganz schön deftig werden.

The airport on St. Barth is considered one of the most dangerous in the world and can only be servewd with a special license. The very short runway must be flown by the pilots in a dive and braked sharply after the “touchdown” of the machine. An approach from the opposite direction over the bay of St. Jean also requires the highest concentratiozn of pilots.

For visitors to St Barth via Saint Martin (Sint Maarten), the ferry can alternatively be used from Princess Juliana, Oysterpond or Marigot; but beware, the crossing between the two islands can be very hearty at high seas.

Iguana delicatissima

Today, we received a visit of a Lesser Antillean Iguana (Iguana delicatissima) that is endangered by our civilization and by the agressive “green” Iguana (Iguana iguana) which arrived on the caribbean islands through the animal trade. From the 17 islands of the West Indies, only 7 are hosting a viable population of the “native” and rare species Iguana delicatissima.

Heute hat uns ein kleiner Antillen-Leguan (Iguana delicatissima) besucht. Dieses Reptil wird von unserer Zivilisation und dem aggressiven “grünen” Leguan (Iguana Iguana) welcher durch den Tierhandel auf die karibischen Inseln gekommen ist, stark bedroht. Von den 17 Westindischen Inseln beherbergen nur noch gerade 7 eine lebensfähige Population dieser seltenen „einheimischen“ Spezies Iguana delicatissima.
