It smells of OLMA

The Ostschweizerische Land- und Milchwirtschaftliche Ausstellung, or OLMA for short, is an annual agricultural trade fair held in St. Gallen since 1943 and is by far Switzerland’s largest public exhibition; about 300,000 visitors flock to St. Gallen during the eleven days of the fair in eastern Switzerland. The OLMA takes place annually in October and begins each Thursday before the “Gallentag” the feast day of St. Gall, the patron saint of St. Gallen.

The biggest attraction of this fair is the parade of a guest canton, a region or a country which presents itself to the public during the fair. The guests of honor this year are the “Fête des Vignerons” from Vevey on Lake Geneva and the “St. Galler Wine” producers. By the way, the parade leads from the train station through the city to the fairgrounds and takes place on the first Saturday of the fair, i.e., today.

The name of the fair under the abbreviation OLMA has been renamed several times during its relatively short history and today stands for “Swiss Fair for Agriculture and Nutrition”. For many visitors „Nutrition“ means Wine, Beer and St. Galler Bratwurst 🙂

Actually, for the people of St. Gallen, OLMA is not just a trade fair like many others, but it is part of their identification. It is an „Oktoberfest“ on a small scale. For many locals, these eleven days in autumn are the most beautiful days of the year! To understand this, foreign visitors should venture into the bulging, noisy, alcohol, cheese and bratwurst-flavored tasting and exhibition halls 🙂 Happy OLMA!

OLMA St. Gallen

Die Ostschweizerische Land- und Milchwirtschaftliche Ausstellung oder kurz die OLMA ist eine seit 1943 jährlich durchgeführte landwirtschaftliche Messe in St. Gallen und ist mit Abstand die grösste Publikumsmesse der Schweiz; ungefähr 300’000 Besucher strömen während den elf Messetagen in die Ostschweiz nach St. Gallen. Die OLMA findet jährlich im Oktober statt und beginnt jeweils am Donnerstag vor dem „Gallentag“ dem Festtag des heiligen Gallus, des Stadtpatrons von St. Gallen. 

Zur grössten Attraktion dieser Messe gehört der feierliche Umzug eines Gastkantons, einer Region oder Landes welche sich während der Messe dem Publikum präsentieren. Die Ehrengäste in diesem Jahr sind das „Fête des Vignerons“ aus Vevey am Genfersee und der „St. Galler Wein“ Produzenten. Übrigens der Umzug führt vom Bahnhof durch die Stadt zum Messegelände und findet heute Samstag statt.

Der Name der Messe unter dem Kürzel OLMA wurde während ihrer relativ kurzen Geschichte mehrmals umbenannt und steht heute für „Schweizer Messe für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung“. Für viele Besucher gilt das Wort “Ernährung” für Wein, Bier und St. Galler Bratwurst 🙂

Für die St. Galler ist die OLMA nicht nur eine Messe wie viele andere, sondern Teil ihrer Identifikation. Es ist ein “Oktoberfest” im kleinen Rahmen. Für viele Einheimische sind diese elf Tage im Herbst die schönsten Tage des Jahres! Um das zu verstehen, sollten sich auswärtige Besucher in die prall gefüllten, lärmigen, Alkohol-, Käse- und Bratwurstduft geschwängerten Degustations-Hallen und Festzelte der Messe wagen 🙂 Happy OLMA!
