The Russian Orthodox Church in the center of Sofia, founded in 1907, was originally intended for the diplomatic mission of the Russian state in Bulgaria. The Saray mosque, which was destroyed after the Russian-Ottoman war (1877-1878) and Bulgaria’s liberation from the Ottoman Empire, originally stood here. Nowadays the patriarchy is a place of prayer union and encounter between the Russian and Bulgarian churches. Namesake and patron saint of this beautiful church is St. Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of Tsar Nicholas II, who ruled the Russian Empire at that time. Even after the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia and during the socialist dictatorship of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria from 1944 to 1989, the church Sveti Nikolaj remained open. However, a visit to the church was not safe for the faithful; the state police was omnipresent at that time! Sveti Nikolaj survived the turmoils and wars of the last century. For tourists it’s worthwhile to visit this small and beautiful church. If you’re around anyway, you should invest a few minutes and maybe you’re lucky and there’s a church service or wedding going on when you are there. Good Luck!

Die 1907 gegründete Russisch-orthodoxe Kirche im Zentrum von Sofia war ursprünglich für die diplomatische Mission des russischen Staates in Bulgarien bestimmt. An diesem Ort stand ursprünglich die nach dem Russisch-Osmanischen Krieg (1877-1878) und der Befreiung aus dem Osmanischen Reich zerstörte Saray-Moschee. Heutzutage ist das Patriarchat ein Ort der Gebetsunion und Begegnung zwischen der russischen und der bulgarischen Kirche. Namensgeber und Schutzpatron dieser wunderschönen Kirche ist der heilige Sankt Nikolaus von Myra, dem Schutzheiligen von Zar Nikolaus ll., der zu jener Zeit das Russische Reich regierte. Auch nach der Oktoberrevolution 1917 in Russland und während der sozialistischen Diktatur der Volksrepublik von 1944 bis 1989 blieb die Kirche Sveti Nikolaj geöffnet. Ein Besuch der Kirche war zu jener Zeit für die Gläubigen nicht ungefährlich; die Staatspolizei war damals allgegenwärtig! Die Sveti Nikolaj hat die Wirren des letzten Jahrhunderts gut überstanden. Es lohnt sich diese kleine und hübsche Kirche zu besichtigen. Wenn man sowieso in der Nähe ist, sollte man ein paar Minuten investieren und vielleicht hat man Glück und es findet gerade ein Gottesdienst oder eine Trauung statt. Viel Glück!
