Amalfi Italy „Mare Nostrum“

The city of Amalfi is one of the most popular and famous tourism destinations in Italy. It is located about 25 kilometers west of Salerno and can be reached either by road along the Amalfi Coast or by boat. Amalfi is located in a deep ravine at the foot of Monte Cerreto, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. Looking back on an eventful history, founded in the 9th century, Amalfi became a major military power in the 12th century, rivaling even Genova and Pisa as the capital of the Duchy of Amalfi.

Over the centuries, the city of Amalfi retained its medieval character with the city gates, the narrow and cobbled streets, the medieval palaces and the romantic, picturesque squares. For me, the Amalfi Coast and the city of Amalfi are always worth a visit.

This week it is time again. On Wednesday, I will fly to Naples and from there with the train to Salerno and then, after a few hours rest, continue my way by boat to Amalfi. The reason for my trip is not the famous Limoncello, I like it though, but I am following an invitation of the gallery ARTETRA to their Vernissage “Mare Nostrum”, an exhibition with the participation of my wife Irene, in the museum “Arsenale”.

In the rain or the brooding sun one finds refuge and rest in the Arsenale, a place where warships of the Republic of Amalfi were built hundreds of years ago. Today, it is a place of history and art! I’m looking forward to the event and will be reporting on it in one of my next posts.

Amalfi Italy

Die Stadt Amalfi ist eine der beliebtesten und bekanntesten Tourismusdestinationen in Italien. Sie liegt etwa 25 Kilometer westlich von Salerno und kann von dort entweder auf der Strasse entlang der Amalfi-Küste oder mit dem Boot erreicht werden. Amalfi liegt in einer tiefen Schlucht am Fusse des Monte Cerreto, umgeben von dramatischen Klippen und mit Blick auf den Golf von Salerno. Amalfi blickt zurück auf eine bewegte Geschichte, sie wurde im 9. Jahrhundert gegründet und entwickelte sich im 12. Jahrhundert zu einer militärischen Grossmacht, die selbst Genua und Pisa als Hauptstadt des Herzogtums Amalfi Konkurrenz machte.

Die Stadt Amalfi behielt über die Jahrhunderte ihren mittelalterlichen Charakter mit den Stadttoren, den engen und gepflasterten Strassen, den mittelalterlichen Palästen und den romantischen, malerischen Plätze. Für mich ist die Amalfi-Küste und die Stadt Amalfi im speziellen, immer eine Reise wert. 

Diese Woche ist es wieder einmal soweit. Am Mittwoch fliege ich nach Neapel und von dort gehts dann mit dem Zug nach Salerno und anschliessend, nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt, mit dem Boot weiter nach Amalfi. Der Grund meiner Reise ist nicht der berühmte Limoncello, den habe ich zwar auch sehr gerne, nein, ich folge einer Einladung der Galerie Artetra an die Vernissage der Ausstellung „Mare Nostrum“, mit Partizipation meiner Frau Irene, im Museum „Arsenale“.

Im Regen oder der brütenden Sonne findet man Zuflucht und Ruhe im Arsenale, einem Ort, an dem vor Hunderten von Jahren Kriegsschiffe der Republik Amalfi gebaut wurden. Heute ist es ein Ort der Geschichte und der Kunst! Ich freue mich auf diesen Anlass und werde euch in einem meiner nächsten Artikel darüber berichten.
