Each year more than a million tourists visit the small mountain village Valldemossa (< 1500 inhabitants) on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca. Valldemossa is located in the northwest of the island and is about 18 kilometers from the capital Palma. The place owes its fame to the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin. He lived there for two months in the winter of 1838/39 together with the French writer George Sand. In this short period they lived in a former Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa.

Their “cell” consisted of three spacious rooms and a small garden with a wonderful view. After the Spanish government revoked the monastery and expropriated it, Frédéric Chopin and George Sand were one of the first sole tenants of one of the converted cells. The fresh, healthy air as well as the seclusion and peace were certainly the main reason to lodge in these monastic walls. Unfortunately, the two had to give up their stay in Valldemossa early, because Chopin’s tuberculosis disease was rapidly deteriorating.

The former convent has been converted into a museum for visitors: it displays typical Mallorcan objects and “Chopin relics” including its death mask. The piano, which Chopin played in January and February 1839, is on display in the bedroom. Also on display are drawings and other items from that period, as well as the original documents for renting the cell and the bills for Chopin’s medical expenses and the piano transport from Paris to Valldemossa.

In my opinion, a trip to Valldemossa is worthwhile it. After your visit to the Chopin museum, you will discover cozy bars, street cafes and restaurants in this beautiful little village. Traveling from Palma by public bus takes less than half an hour and is the cheapest way to get to Valldemossa! Enjoy it 🙂

Jedes Jahr besuchen über eine Million Touristen die weniger als 1500 Einwohner zählende Bergdorf Valldemossa auf der spanischen Baleareninsel Mallorca. Valldemossa liegt im Nordwesten der Insel und ist etwa 18 Kilometer von der Hauptstadt Palma entfernt. Seine Berühmtheit hat der Ort dem polnischen Komponist Frédéric Chopin zu verdanken. Er lebte dort während zweier Monate im Winter 1838/39 mit der französischen Schriftstellerin George Sand. In dieser kurzen Zeit lebten sie in einem ehemaligen Kartäuserkloster, der Kartause von Valldemossa. 

Ihre „Zelle“ bestand aus drei geräumigen Zimmern und einem kleinen Garten mit einer wunderbaren Weitsicht. Nach dem die spanische Regierung das Kloster aufhob und enteignete, waren Frédéric Chopin und George Sand eine der ersten Einzelmieter dieser Räumlichkeiten. Die frische, gesunde Luft sowie die Abgeschiedenheit und Ruhe waren sicher wichtige Gründe sich in diesen klösterlichen Gemäuern einzumieten. Leider mussten die beiden ihren Aufenthalt in Valldemossa Frühzeit aufgeben; weil sich Chopin’s Tuberkulose-Krankheit zusehends verschlechterte.

Das ehemalige Kloster wurde für Besucher zum Museum umgebaut: Es werden typische mallorquinische Gegenstände und “Chopin-Reliquien” darunter seine Totenmaske ausgestellt. Das Klavier, das Chopin im Januar und Februar 1839 spielte, ist im Schlafzimmer ausgestellt. Ebenfalls zu sehen sind Zeichnungen und andere Gegenstände jener Zeit, sowie die Originaldokumente für die Miete der Zelle und die Rechnungen für Chopin’s Arztkosten und den Klaviertransport von Paris nach Valldemossa.

Ein Ausflug lohnt sich in diese schöne Gegend. In Valldemossa gibt es nach dem Besuch des Chopin Museums viele gemütliche Bars, Strassenkaffees und Restaurants. Die Fahrt von Palma mit dem öffentlichen Bus dauert weniger als eine halbe Stunde und ist die günstigste Variante nach Valldemossa zu kommen! Viel Vergnügen 🙂
