The Castle in Zug Switzerland

The castle is located in the center of Zug and is known as the oldest remaining building in the city. The origins of the castle date back to the 12th century but traces of settlement were found already from the 8th century. Around 1300 the castle belonged to the Habsburgs. As a matter of fact, it is believed that the Habsburg-Austrian army gathered in the area of the castle prior to the Battle of Morgarten in 1315. A small force from the Swiss Confederacy ambushed and defeated the Habsburg army on the shores of Lake Ägeri near the Morgarten Pass in Switzerland. The Swiss victory consolidated the Confederation of the Three Forest Cantons (Uri, Schwyz & Unterwalden) that formed the core of modern Switzerland. 

Since the middle of the 14th century, the castle belonged to several important families of Zug until the 20th century. After a renovation, the castle was opened as a historic museum. In addition to constantly changing and very interesting special exhibitions, there are impressive insights into the past of the city of Zug and its history. After visiting the museum you can refresh yourself in the beautiful garden café. A visit to the castle is recommended and should be combined with a subsequent walk through the beautiful old town of Zug.

Die Burg liegt im Zentrum von Zug und gilt als das älteste erhaltene Gebäude der Stadt. Die Ursprünge der Burg gehen auf das 12. Jahrhundert zurück, aber bereits im 8. Jahrhundert wurden Siedlungsspuren gefunden. Um 1300 gehörte das Schloss den Habsburgern. Es wird angenommen, dass die Habsburg-Österreichische Armee sich im Bereich der Burg vor der Schlacht von Morgarten im Jahr 1315 versammelte. Eine kleine Truppe der Schweizer Konföderation überfiel und besiegte die Habsburger Soldaten am Ufer des Ägeri See in der Nähe des  Morgarten Passes. Der Sieg konsolidierte den Bund der drei Urkantone (Uri, Schwyz & Unterwalden), die den Kern der modernen Schweiz bildete.

Seit der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts gehörte die Burg bis ins 20. Jahrhundert einigen bedeutenden Zuger Familien. Nach einer Renovierung wurde das Schloss als historisches Museum eröffnet. Ein Besuch der Burg ist empfehlenswert und sollte mit einem anschließenden Spaziergang durch die wunderschöne Altstadt von Zug kombiniert werden.
