If you stroll through the Niederdorf, a neighborhood in the old town of Zurich, past restaurants and bars, you may have discovered the “Cabaret Voltaire” on Spiegelgasse 1. Right there, dadaism was born in this pub 102 years ago. Hugo Ball, a German author and biographer, opened the “Voltaire” in 1916. He wanted to fill the gloom of the First World War with light. Dadaism endeavored to distance itself from the ostentatiousness of that time and from conventional art and sought the other, something not yet found. Therefore, artists and guests, such as Hans Arp, were welcome in search of something new and were invited to participate and perform in the Cabaret Voltaire. The art movement Dada, an impulse generator also for today’s contemporary art, is well-known for its wit, its irony, at times madness and insanity. Incidentally, during his exile in Switzerland, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin lived only a few meters from the “Cabaret Voltaire” at Spiegelgasse 14 🙂

Wer durch das Niederdorf, ein Quartier in der Zürcher Altstadt schlendert, vorbei an Restaurants und Bars, mag das „Cabaret Voltaire“ an der Spiegelgasse 1 entdeckt haben. Genau dort, in dieser Kneipe wurde vor 102 Jahren der Dadaismus geboren. Hugo Ball, ein deutscher Autor und Biograf, eröffnete 1916 das „Voltaire“. Er wollte die Düsterheit des Ersten Weltkriegs mit Licht erfüllen. Der Dadaismus war bestrebt sich von der Biederkeit jener Zeit und von der konventionellen Kunst zu distanzieren und suchte das Andere, das noch nicht Gefundene. Deshalb waren Künstler und Gäste, wie zum Beispiel Hans Arp, auf der Suche nach etwas Neuem hier im „Voltaire“ willkommen und eingeladen mitzuwirken und aufzutreten. Die Kunstbewegung Dada, ein Impulsgeber auch für unsere heutige Zeitgenössische Kunst, ist bekannt für seinen Witz, seine Ironie, zuweilen Verrücktheit und Wahnsinn. Übrigens, Wladimir Iljitsch Lenin wohnte während seinem Zürcher Exil in der Schweiz nur wenige Meter vom „Cabaret Voltaire“ entfernt an der Spiegelgasse 14 🙂
